Hello all. Do any of the new flavours of NASlite use the new ext4 filesystem, which apparently performs any and all fsck disk checks in minutes instead of hours as the earlier versions of the Linux filesystem did...(ext2 and ext3)

The exceedingly long times for fsck to run, are what stopped me using NASlite, but it's been a few years, so thought I would check back in here, and see if that is still an issue???

+1 for ext4 if it indeed speeds up the all too frequent disk checks....

see http://www.serverelements.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3252&p=17608#p17608 Ralph has indicated that EXT4 will be coming as for FSCK it now only runs every 180 days (after boot of course not if kept running) and after so many boots (not sure how many) which ever comes first I believe so it isnt to much of a problem for me now apart from once or twice a year when it seems to take an age to come up (I do it late at night so it isnt as bad).

Further reading in the forum http://www.serverelements.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3259 (Look for posts from both Ralph and Tony on this one) actually suggests that it is only after 180 days.

Hope this helps.

And again +1 vote for EXT4

Doug

Yeah, it was just I was talking to a Linux friend of mine(who really likes the NASlite idea, BTW), and he was saying that in ext4, the fsck issues are fixed and it only takes minutes now instead of what feels like days...

Substitute s for u in fsck, and that is pretty much what everyone who runs into it(the ext2 and ext3 versions anyway) says, usually out loud.

But obviously, it is not in NASlite2 - yet, so I will keep my eye on this forum to see if it pops up anytime soon-ish. :)

Just checking in with the forums - have not been here for a long time...

Any movement on the ext4 support?

I can't see that the lack of EXT4 support is any real reason to resist adoption of NASLite. As noted previously, NL will only run an FSCK if the server is rebooted 180 times or there is a disorderly shutdown. As to it taking hours under EXT3 (NASLite's current FS) I can't say that it takes all that long considering that the file system has a journal applied. The second reason is that the even if they do come out with the next version and it supports EXT4 there is likely a simple migration path to the new version.
