Ok ... let's drop the adapter (it adds a possible point of failure), and find a PC to which you can directly connect the SATA drive. Then start DSL on that. "fdisk -l" should work somehow :?

Using the "0" is probably invalid, so I am not concerned about those error messages. Again ... until you can get "fdisk -l" to work there's not really any progress ... that data is on that drive ...

I've had good luck with Ubuntu 10 ...
