Hi folks,

I think one of my hard drives in my NAS died. I noticed about a week ago it was not showing up in Windows Explorer when I looked, so tonight I opened up the case and checked all the cables, etc. Everything looked ok, so I started it up again and looked at the syslog. I see a number of errors reported on this drive. It's a WD 160gig (don't laugh...that was a big drive back in 2003 when it was made!). I had kept it in there mainly for holding digital video I'd captured from my camcorder so I had it all in one place and didn't have it on my main PC's hard drive. I still have all the mini-dv tapes, so I haven't lost a lot, but there were a few DVD images on there for DVD's I've made that would be nice to retrieve if I could. I've put the syslog below. I was wondering could tell from this information if the drive is really dead, or if there might be some way to revive it (and what might be the best way to test it if there's a possibility it might be revived).

Thanks,

Gary

lots of stuff there that dont look good - but i have no idea from the syslog - heres what i would do - disconnect all the other drives and just leave the suspect one and a cd rom on the box - download a copy of linux - ubuntu - mint or any of the others and boot from the live cd

you can then start lo look at the suspect drive - there are data recovery programs for linux - they may get off what you want

Thanks Tony. I did what you suggested using an Ubuntu Live 10.04 LTS CD. It was able to see the drive, but could not mount it. It appeared from the information displayed that it couldn't see any partitions on the drive (it said 160gb available for partitions to be added).

Also, the drive was only on for a few minutes and got REALLY hot, so I think it's toast. I will try some of the data recovery tools and see if I can get anything off of it, but I think this one is going to be retired.

Thanks,

Gary
