Can a dead motherboard battery cause a computer to turn off? Dell Dimension 4700 turns off after a while or does not turn on, the power light turns orange and flashes. Can this be caused by a dead or low battery? The motherboard does not look damaged or have leaking capacitors, but sometimes the power supply fan doesn't turn on, usually when it is first turned on.

a dead bios battery can cause all sorts of grief - from what you describe it could certainly be the battery - it could just be the bios that has got its head up a dark place - remove the battery leave it 15 minutes or so and replace it - reset bios and go from there - if that does not cure it replace the battery - easy to do and not a fortune

Hi,

Heat problems will turn off your computer for sure. Watch that all the fans are running and if the computers turns off while they turn (at their usual speed). Sometimes, about to die fans turn but slowly and thus not effectively.
