ok i have had my NL running for about 2 years now with no new changes but the other day i set some files to transfer to it while i was at work when i got home i found this screen

kernel BUG at skbuff.c:92!

so i power it down then on again and everything was fine for a few days then i notice that the file i set to transfer did not make it before the kernel BUG so i set them to transfer again and the same thing happened again
so i tried to see what the problem was but i learned that i dont speak lunix at all lol but i did figure out what triggers it it only happens when you transfer large files to it over 2 GB you can transfer smaller files to it just fine

i tried to transfer files to it from my laptop, desktop, ftp,i streamed movies from it to 4 TV's all at the same time trying to get it to and got nothing all was working great till i tried to move larger files to it and i get the kernel BUG

but anyway if someone can tell whats wrong with this before i edit all the numbers in thats great

thanks for reading this and any help would be much appreciated

Right I am by no means a Linux expert but this stinks of a file size limit.

First thing which version of NL are you running (It will certainly help to know that info)

have you thought about upgrading to the latest version which definately will handle large files, I regularly transfer files in the 40Gb size range (BluRay Rips) with v1.62 of M2 (this equates to v2.62 of Naslite-2). (really must get round to upgrading to 1.64 but if it aint broke as they say).

Hope this helps just a little bit and I am sure someone with more experience will chip in and either confirm what I have said or give another answer.

Doug.

maybe - maybe not but had problems of a similar nature but not the error - usual pull stuff - remake cables ect

i concluded it was a memory fault - changed one stick and it went away - have since used the memory elsewhere with no problem - but at the time i was convinced

just googled this up I think this probably confirms the issue to be the older kernal in the earlier releases of NL

http://linuxmafia.com/faq/VALinux-kb/2gb-filesize-limit.html

But more than willing to be proved wrong

ok i am on 2.4.37.NASLite

and as far as the file size limit i use to transfer 250GB at a time i use it to more or less dump my desktops hard drives into
it i could pick video folders and just move them all over at once been doing it that way for almost 2 years well i think i upgraded to the 2.4.37 i am using now in that time but it has worked great till now i think i will check out the ram cause it could be that but that will have to wait till the shops open back up on monday cause i dont have any of that fits the MB anymore laying around

can only say what i would do - if it helps your thought process then good

you know pretty well how to reproduce the error so changing one thing at a time keep trying to solve it

i personally would pull my working drives from the NAS and put them somewhere safe - if it gets worse or corrupts something better to have it on a test drive

from there its a matter of a list - whatever is thought to be the next thing that canbe causing the problem - things fail so go the easy route when pulling/changing stuff

drive first - thats more for safety - but it might be that
reinstall naslite

then start changing bits

network card
cables
etc etc down to cpu, motherboard

hopefully it is only one component - if more it gets difficult

thanks tony for the fast reply and i am working in it atm so i will let you guys know if i find out anything

side note i think it now to be something in the cables cause it crashes on drive to drive transfer too IDK if it always did this but i tried it and it crashed again does fine with 1 file at a time moved a 2.8 GB file and it was fine but moved 2 files that were 4.7GB together and and it crashed after the first one so i am thinking it has to be a cable or it could be the ram too i guess idk will just have to keep plugging away at it and see what i get out of it

you have covered it really - and answered your own question - motherboard maybe - daft one from an experience the other day - power supply

XP m/c came here - had been resetting for no reason - went through all you have - it powered ever time - 10 minutes later reset

new power supply been on for 4 days now

just a thought - its the last thing we usually look at

I would second that, I too have had a PSU problem of this type (It is so uncommon that you have it once and forget about it). It has to be worth a try as they are easy to come by and easy to test without having to rip the machine apart.

ok i give up i guess.................. diff motherboard, diff cpu ,new PSU , diff case ,picked up a new nic again for the pc and the NL box , neighbors had 2 old cards we tried too new ram (fresh install of windows 7 started thinking it was the PC) tried the neighbors router and switch made new cables, diff serge protecter, i am ready to try a shiny new sledge hammer on it lol only thing i can think of now is to upgrade to the latest and greatest NL or just turn the damm thing off the damm thing about it is when i tranfer files less than one gig over i get speeds around 75MB-110MB i was happy with 50MB but stack up more than about a gig and it pops that error but if i do ftp to it now and set the transfer rate to around 25MB it and one conection it will transfer all day long that way i just wish i could figure out what the heck happened to it along the way

anyway thanks to all that have tried to help me
joebob6625

PS and the wife got me 2 new 2TB hard drives for x-max but i cant fill them up lol

ok just tried it with the bad drive out and it still gets the above error

i have also noticed that i have 2 GB of ram in and it will slowly creep up to where it uses it all is this normal?

Image

that is after 16 hours up time and for most of that no one has been home to use it just a side thought
