I'm trying to add a new 1.5tb disk to my new Naslite-2 setup, and it won't format the drive. I get the following error:

mke2fs 1.40.4 (31-Dec-2007)
/dev/discs/disc0/part1: Memory allocation failed while setting up superblock

ERROR!

Formatting of Disk-0 failed.

The disk is:

Disk Model: SAMSUNG HD154UI, SN# S1XWJ90Z902925, v.1AG01118
Interface: DEVICE-HDA
Status: NOT MOUNTED

It's conecting to a PATA port on it's own through a PATA/SATA converter. I've also tried it with an Adapetec 2610SA SATA card, and it wouldn't boot up at all.

Any ideas gratefully recieved.

Thanks, Alan

I had the same type errors not long back (but for a disk check) and the root cause was lack of ram what do you have in that machine and can you throw some more at it.

It appears that NL can run on low ammounts of ram when it come to managing large disks it needs a lot more for the housekeeping type tasks.

Hope this helps

Doug

Thanks, Doug. I currently have 64 Mb RAM. Any idea how much more I'll need? I'd hate to, say, double it, and find it still not enough!

I would guess absolute minimum 256 for such a large disk (when getting filled and doing a file-check later during regular operations even that could trip you up). But I would recommend 512 to be on the safe side.

I looted another machine for 256 Mb of SDRAM, and all appears to work.

Many thanks!

Glad it worked out ok and thanks for letting us know. It all helps to build up the knowledge base.

Just a quick follow up ... are you now running 256MB or 320MB ?

I'm now using 256 Mb. Actually, due to an installation error of the ram (by the idiot behind the keyboard), the disk formatted OK on 128 Mb Ram. Transfering several hundred Gb of data, with an average file size of 100 Mb was however painfully slow. (Days...)

I've obtained a 512 Mb sdram, but can't get it to work with the motherboard - I may be above what the Mb can handle, but I haven't found out for sure yet.
