What is the fastest or best processor that my ms-7501 motherboard will support? I want to upgrade, but I'm not sure what it is compatible with. The MS-7501 motherboard has an AM2+ socket. The fastest AM2+ socket processor appears to be the Phenom II 940, but will it work with the motherboard?

I would say that you should go and check on that at the motherboard makers support site for that info.

To be honest, unless you are running an array of drives on a hardware RAID card upgrading the processor will yield little in the way of an increase in throughput. Adding more memory will give you much more of a gain.
