Has anyone used Naslite on a dell precision 470 box? It has an integrated raid controller. I happened to see one of my neighbors trashing it so I snatched it up. I am considering moving my Naslite installation to this box if the raid will work.

I knew that SW raid is not supported. Just not sure if this is embedded HW raid on the motherboard (if such an animal exists). I have not even begun to look at the thing. Just noticed the specs.

To the best of my knowledge there are no MBs with embedded RAID engines. You need to buy a special RAID card that plugs into a PCI slot and a mezzanine connector off of that. These in turn have the RAID engine and memory to run as a full hardware RAID.

In your case the 470 does not have the SCSI interface, according to Dell, that would be the 670 that has it.

Also, if it didn't have the RAID card add in then it was not really RAID.

Looks to me to be a soft RAID 0 or 1 box only (unless you add a RAID card to it). That said it would make a great NAS since it is a Xeon based MB with a GigE NIC. I would be inclined to move to it if it works. Nice score.
