as it seems filesystem check at shutdown is a 'pipe dream' or at least a long way off - can i check a couple of things with those who know

i use my main server for video - tv and movies - adding to it now and again - its a 1 terabyte drive so a disk check takes about 90 minutes and whatever i set the time or frequency to it can be a pain when i turn the server on and want to watch a movie and a disk check kicks in

i believe it is possible to turn the disc check off from a linux distro disc

so

1 - if i do that am i right it thinking that if i only read from the disc nothing is written back from Naslite - so assuming the disc works and does not fail all 'should' be ok

2 - if and when i do add to the disc - i can force a disc check to prove integrity - which may or not be a bad thing

Answer to 1: Theoretically yes but must be very careful in case of sudden power cut off (if you don't have a UPS) and also when the drive starts getting "old". Even without writing to it, some sectors will go bad with time.

Answer to 2: You can do a fs check when ever you like but if you want to fs check AND correct errors, you must unmount the drive, reboot, do a fs check and repair, reset the drive to RW (or R) and reboot once more.

Regards.

thanks

so a good? compromise would be to combine 1 and 2 for my convenience - i.e turn off filesystem but institute a manual fs check at a time that i dont want to use the drive - is it not possible to force the check easier than your method [which is probarbly the correct way] by simply turning the nas box off without an ordered shutdown - at the next boot it will then check the drive/s

You know that computers are sensible things... If you like, you can just unplug the NL box and hope that it will not bite you back  but, personally, I would not recommend it.

Regards

i came to the conclusion a long time ago that computers are female - work from that assumption and they make perfect sense
