Gents,

I have a strange problem I can't seem to get solved. I recently reconfigured my NASLite server and moved some of the disks around. After doing so I reinstalled NASLite (HD version) on Disk-0 but now when I boot the system it finds and reads the config data on Disk-5. (It boots from Disk-0.)

How can I tell NL to ignore the data on Disk-5? Also as a related question how can I completely wipe out the partition table on all of the disks? (I am assuming if I do not do this the small boot partition residing on the old boot disk will not be used for data storage.)

Thanks,

Tom

there is an option on the boot cd to remove the boot info - i assume disk 5 was your original boot disk - so its being picked up

as far as i know removing the info on disk 5 will not affect any data on the main partition - just remove naslite

to remove the small partition - i have done that in the past using a live linux cd - but if you then add that small amount of disk space you will lose all the data on that disk - i dont think theres a way to give it back via naslite

i dont think formatting in linux gets rid of the config info - that has to be done first via the naslite boot cd

Thanks Tony. There is no data on any of the disks so I think I'll try booting a linux CD and repartitioning the drives. That should wipe out everything so I can start from scratch, right? (No need then to run the NASLite boot CD to remove anything since it will all be gone, right?)

not sure whether formatting in linux will wipe the config - i tried it in windows as i had a similar situation and it did not - dont know where its stored but it did not seem to be anywhere a format touched - have learnt a little bit about linux since then but not tried it on that

seem to remember theres a comment from tony somewhere on here about it

worth a try in linux - if it does not work then go back to the naslite disc

I finally fixed the problem. I could not "deactivate" using the NASLite boot CD because it would not let me select Disk-5, probably because Disk-5 is on a disk on a 3ware RAID controller (but not part of a RAID array.) I physically removed the 3ware controller leaving only Disk-0 in the system, installed on Disk-0, and then reinstalled the 3ware controller.

As a side note; before installing NASLite back on the system I took a day or so to see how FreeNAS would do. The bottom line is that FreeNAS was slow. I guess every once in a while it pays to remind myself why I use NASLite. :D
