Sorry if I offbase here, as I'm hoping the newest version will work with my NSD7800. The hardware specs seems to indicate it should.

Will the new V2.6 be strictly for Naslite-2? Or is this in conjunction with a Naslite-M2 2.6 release as well?

I'm hoping to purchase Naslite-M2 to try and see if it works currently with the Marvell Sata controllers.

1. If I purchase M2 today (this week, etc), would I need to repurchase it to get the newest release?

2. Or possibly be included in the testing?

NASLite 2 v2.6
NASLite M2 v1.6 (will be released after the NL2 v2.6 launch)

This will be a free upgrade for everyone with a *valid* download link, expired links can be revalidated.

Current release version probably doesn't support that Marvell chipset, v2.6 should, see posts pointing to the hardware ref or download the v2.6 HDT (Hardware Detection Tool)

Thanks.

Also, I finished up the last few issues I had and we'll be prepping v2.6 for testing, hopefully releasing in the next 2 weeks.

Thanks.

Thats good news, and I hope to get it all working. I just tried out the hardware detection tool, and it does list/show the Marvel sata controller. That said..

I'm gonna go ahead and purchase naslite-M2 now, and to get familiar with it, and give it go around. The hopefully the M2 v1.6 upgrade will get it all working smoothly.

Any ideas as to when to expect the Naslite M2 release the after NL 2.6 launch?

EDIT:

Well, I purchased and tried the latest M2, and it looks like I'm SOL at the moment until the new version comes out. It turns out the built in nic included in this machine is the : VIA VT6120/VT6121/VT6122 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

I read in the Core3-network pdf that this should be supported there. So, guess I'll be waiting patiently, and available for any testing if needed.

You could always put a cheap nic in till 2.6/1.6 come out.

I submitted my final patches to Tony, we're figuring by the end of this month. After NASLite-2 v2.6, M2 v1.6 should follow shortly there after if there's no major issues.

I would if I could. But this machine, a Via NSD7800 is very compacted, with no room to attach a card into anywhere. If I want to use the machine, its going to have to be using the internal nic.

I can wait a little longer till the new releases come out. I'm all paid for M2, so just need to wait for the new release.

OK, get ready, it's a hell of a release!

There have been a number of us testing this for a few weeks now on a number of different hardware packages. I can say that it supports a hell of allot more devices than before. I can also say that the performance is quite a jump from before. The really nice thing is that the kernel uses modular drivers and so stays small and fast rather than having to be bloated with every driver they can cram in like the last kernel.

The below test was run on a Sun V20Z server with a pair of AMD Opteron dual core 2.6GHz processors and 8GB of Reg ECC DDR400 (this current release only supports 4GB though) and a pair of U320 10K SCSI drives.
Image
Needless to say the single drive performance numbers are impressive. I can only imagine the speed with an array connected to the thing.

Second test machine I was running it on was a little more pedestrian. A simple Intel desktop board D101GGC with a P4 2.66GHz processor at 400MHz, 512MB DDR400 RAM and on board video using 32MB of that 512MB. The NIC is a Dlink DGE-560E based on a Marvel 88E8052 PCIe to GigE chip. For the HDD I used an LSI MegaRAID 511 card with three 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 ATA133 drives in a hardware RAID0 array.
Image
Again a little less performance but still more than usable for an HD video stream.

Get it when it's released, you will not be unhappy with this OS, I highly recommend it and not just because I tested it, it really is much improved.

Mike

Also very happy with the new CORE3 NL2.60. I get similar numbers using a single Seagate ST3400633AS on an Intel Atom MiniITX (D945GCLF2) ... runs thru a gigabit hub, plus a gigabit switch from a Dual-Core Dell with WinXP. Here are the results (using same command line as Mike) -- Summary only for two runs:

Code:
Write Summary : 5000.00 frames in 79.45 secs
              :   54.20(min)   62.93(avg)   72.80(max) FPS
              :   36.17(min)   42.00(avg)   48.59(max) MB/s
Read Summary : 5000.00 frames in 133.77 secs
             :   20.78(min)   37.38(avg)   46.40(max) FPS
             :   13.87(min)   24.95(avg)   30.97(max) MB/s

Write Summary : 5000.00 frames in 79.84 secs
              :   44.40(min)   62.62(avg)   72.40(max) FPS
              :   29.63(min)   41.80(avg)   48.32(max) MB/s
Read Summary : 5000.00 frames in 136.38 secs
             :   18.00(min)   36.66(avg)   42.95(max) FPS
             :   12.01(min)   24.47(avg)   28.66(max) MB/s

On this 2nd run the 12.01MB/s was the first read, next lowest was 16.98, all others were 21+. Something similar happened on the 1st run: a 13.87 in the middle, an 16.82 as the first read, and all else 21+.

The Writes are faster due to the 16MB cache on this 7,200rpm desktop drive.

Well, I can't say i've tested speeds yet, but.....

It appears the new version 2.6 does not support the Marvel Sata driver in my VIA NSD7800 machine, thus I'm limited to using 4 of the 8 drives in it. Anyone have any ideas on getting a Marvel sata chipset to work?

Start a new thread regarding this Marvel controller and we'll look into it.

Thanks.

Hi Folks,

A question as to the benefit of updating from 2.11 to 2.6 when using very old hardware.

I have a Athlon 800Mhz processor (for you youngsters, that's similar to an 'original' Pentium 90) from around the year 2000 with 640MB of RAM (the maximum this machine can take).

Is there any performance benefit to moving to version 2.6, or should I just stick with 2.11?

Many thanks.

Difficult to say ... depends on what your performance is now, but unless you are hampered by some issue, 2.6 will likely give you only some incremental improvement. If you already have gigabit and 7,200rpm drives with good sized buffers and your current setup is very stable you should be all set. But how about running a "diskwriggler" performance test and comparing to what other users have reported on this forum ? That will give us more data to give you a better answer. (And it's still possible that the new drivers in CORE3 help with throughput.)

Ran some DiskWriggler tests:
Code:
RAID-5 on Adaptec 21610SA:
Writing 6144 x 1048576 byte frames into file y:/framestream.dat
Write Summary : 6144.00 frames in 123.58 secs
              :    0.09(min)   49.72(avg)   62.27(max) FPS
              :    0.09(min)   49.72(avg)   62.27(max) MB/s

Reading 6144 x 1048576 byte frames from file y:/framestream.dat
Read Summary : 6144.00 frames in 172.86 secs
             :   29.02(min)   35.54(avg)   39.68(max) FPS
             :   29.02(min)   35.54(avg)   39.68(max) MB/s

Single SATA 1.5TB HDD:
Writing 6144 x 1048576 byte frames into file x:/framestream.dat
Write Summary : 6144.00 frames in 69.66 secs
              :   54.00(min)   88.20(avg)  100.65(max) FPS
              :   54.00(min)   88.20(avg)  100.65(max) MB/s

Reading 6144 x 1048576 byte frames from file x:/framestream.dat
Read Summary : 6144.00 frames in 129.86 secs
             :   34.20(min)   47.31(avg)   48.60(max) FPS
             :   34.20(min)   47.31(avg)   48.60(max) MB/s
Very pleased by the results - not sure why the reads are slower than the writes though.
