Hi,
yesterday evening is bought NASLite 2 HDD.

I installed it on a VIA C3 with ~ 700 MHz. On the IDE Bus is a CF Card with 64 MB and NASLite2 on it.
Now i configure all, everything is fine.

Start with a 200 GB extern USB Drive (iomega) , format it and let it mount.

Till yet, everything is still fine, but after starting copy large Files (FTP or CIFS) the Speed breaks down after some MegaBytes and the Storage Status Page don´t Show the Disk-1 anymore. After finish copy it is back at the status page.

I try once the onBoard NIC and after that i put a new Digitus NIC into the System, but with the same resolution :(

Here is my activ NIC

External usb drives are very very very slow. What's happening is the ram buffers get full and then the nic waits on the drive to flush the buffers. Try ide or sata and the problem will go away.

My experience anyway :)

oh no don´t tell me such things

my opinion was to get the USB Drives into the LAN....and now you say it won´t work ...holy s**t... :?
The Board has just one IDE and on this is plugged the Flash Card with the OS..so no space for any intern drives..

What can i do? Is there a way to make temp space, so if i plug a 40 GB intern HDD with OS on it, can i tell him to use temp this space will copy to the external drives?

thanks

EDIT : could it be that i have an IRQ Conflict with USB and NIC ?? IRQ 11
My Problem is there is no option in Bios to disable onboard LAN :(

EDIT 2 : did some changes, disable intern USB and add an USB PCI Card...boot system with the usb hdd on it...now copy files is just really short times stopping (on FTP mode) and CIFS is short times stopping two... but status don´t loose the HDD ... i think its really a buffer problem!!

Got your mail commander...

Dimension is right that USB is generally not a performance oriented protocol, but there are some things you may want to check beforehand. Make sure that USB2 is enabled in the BIOS and that all unnecessary devices such as audio, LPT, COM, etc are disabled. Also make sure ACPI as well as PnP OS are enabled.

Set the BIOS, reboot and give it a shot...

hi thanks for answer :)

i move some files now an speed is better..have disabled all i can at bios..

acpi i have reactivated ... but PnP OS i have to enabeld...isn´t yet!
USB2 can´t activate at bios...but i use a PCI USB Card now and disabled the intern USB...

While copy files now you can see writing at ~10 MB/s and short breaks...now i will activate PnPOS and give feedback .. :)

ok, runs better yet :) i think 256 MB Ram is one problem too ;) i copy via FTP files an he is using 237 from 241 MB...

when copy is finished will put more ram in the system... i hope it is DDR ram :) i think it will be better with 512 or 768 MB

The more buffer RAM the better but the setup you have there, though energy efficient, is not likely to provide as stable and fast a server as one might like or expect to get from a properly implemented NASLite install.

so if i put 1 or 2 GB Ram into the System the USB Drives will work proberly right? cause he have more space for buffering data right?...

thanks

Ram buffers will still fill up - it will just take a bit longer....

ok but take a look, if i copy 1 GB File to Disk an have 2 GB Ram, so round about 1,8 GB Buffer....he can write at full speed to the NAS and then write to HDD...

Mhhh i´m lucky now that i have first a test system...nothing to pay for (hardware)... now i know what i need for my productiv system and i think for full performance i need SATA HDDs

The files will simply back up in the buffer and you will see the same thing happen, IE: waiting for the writes to complete, it will just take a bit longer before the buffer fills and then you are in the same boat again. Get rid of the USB. If you feel that you must use a USB drive then it can be an Rsync target for backup. For performance you want to use a PATA or SATA device/s as the storage targets, and RAID if you got the means.

If NASLite supports you card then, yes. eSATA and SATA are the same. The only difference is that the connectors have a retainer clip on them. Be sure and check the hardware reference for chipsets and/or cards supported and make sure that the card uses or is one of them.
