I have 2 Western Digital 160 GB drives attached to a 7506 4LP 3ware controller in a non raid configuration. I have tried every Motherboard Bios setting possible to get SMART to work. SMART will work with the drives attached to the Motherboard IDE controller, but not with the 3ware controller. Am I trying to do something that is not possible? Also how important is SMART? and should I even worry about it?

Thanks Gary

I don't think that there is any way to "see" the SMART information of the drives attached to the 3Ware card short of installing some form of 3Ware program onto the server - which, of course, you can't.

The 3Ware card will see the SMART information, however it will not pass it on. This is more relevant when using multiple drives in RAID - which SMART information would the card pass for the RAID array?
