It has been a while since I've done an upgrade. I recall a procedure to update/upgrade without losing all of your settings. Can anyone point me to the procedure or outline it for me ... thank you.

If your using USB then:

1) boot 2.06;
2) extract USB stick and install 2.10 on it (on another PC);
3) put USB stick back into same socket on Server;
4) save configuration;
5) reboot.

.... I think.

I'm having problems with my upgrade from 2.06 -- the installer detects the existing installation but says it cannot update it (cannot update/install the file system). Is there any way to work around this?

I had the same problem. I just selected the new install option (can't recall the exact phrase) on the USB drive and all went well. I had to do all the settings (except the mirrors) once the install was finished though :(

The existing storage partitions we recognized and there was no need to reformat them though, right? I have a regular back-up regimen, but I really don't feel like waiting hours for a restore to complete.

Nothing was touched on the drives (except the USB drive of course ;) )

I had to fill in everything in NL like a new inastall. The "old" (2.06) activation code didn't change and the mirrors either. I had to fill in the IP info, time server data etc.

Regards

Using the new v2.10 installer to "upgrade" an existing NASLite-2 USB install will not work due to a difference in the way the boot device is partitioned. You'll have to install rather than upgrade. Only HDD can be upgraded since it uses the same partitions.

The benefit of replacing the old USB format with the new one is that if you have a large flash drive - 32M or larger, you'll be able to format the remaining available space and use it for storage. Things like the NASLite manual or other permanent read-only items can be stored on there and the storage then shared RO to prevent trashing the flash prematurely. That is just an idea of course, considering flash storage has a limited write life.
