Hi, Sorry for the LONG post...

I just upgraded to NL 2.10 and while doing this I figured I would add a Gb switch and a nic. Everything works execpt that when copying data from the nas, the speed is horrible. I did some tests with diskwriggler and here is was I got.

I've got 3 systems on this network, the NAS, the Xp Pro, and my main system which is also XP Pro. All systems are connected on the same Gb switch. The 2 xp systems are using onboard Nvidia nics, the nas has a PCI nic with an RTL8169 chipset, an AMD 2200+, 1gig of ram, 1 1tb hd and 1 500gig hd, I've also disabled the LPT and COM ports.

I know there is definitely a problem with the nas, but on the XP system are those numbers right? I havn't done any other Gb stuff so I don't have a comparison.

Also on the nas when I go to the Show Network Configuration screen the first page would show info about the nic, with the Gb nic installed it says no data available.

BTW: I also have serious issues with speed using naslite with my GB card. I have a WHS in my setup and the speeds to and from this server are lighting fast compared to the naslite box.

I've had mixed results with rtl8169 cards. Intel or 3com perform way better with naslite.

I think that may have been my problem -- The other day I pulled a p4 mb with an intel chipset and a broadcomm integrated nic and my speeds are much higher on the nas but there is still a big difference between my read and write speeds. I'am waiting for a D-link or Linksys switch to come in and and see if that performs better then the intellinet that I'am using now.

Most of the cheap gigabit switches are based on a hand full of switch chips, as such the performance will not differ much from one to the next. If you really want a switch that will handle high loads without choking then you need to start to look at the small to medium enterprise level products. Sadly this will bring with it a high cost, $100.00 to $300.00 for a used device but it is worth it. The performance is higher and these are generally managed. This means that you are able to control the switch functions to a much greater degree as well as monitor it.

Just a thought, sometimes we save a few pennies in the short term only to waste dollars later.
