I've had my NasLite-2 HDD running great since about mid June. About 2 weeks ago I increased the memory from 4GB to 8GB. On POST, the system checks all 8GB but NasLite-2 only sees 4GB. Also, I see alot of disk activity when nothing is being written to or copied from my system.

Here is what I am running:

1 - Asus P5K WS motherboard
1 - Intel Celeron 420 (1.6GHz)
4 - 2GB RAM DIMMs
1 - Intel PRO/1000 GT Network Adapter
1 - Brand X PCI VGA Adapter
1 - LSI MegaRAID SATA 300-8XLP 8-Channel Low-Profile RAID Controller Card
8 - Samsung 750GB SATA hard drives (32MB buffer)
1 - 1GB CF (boot drive)

NASLite-2 kernel supports up-to 4G of RAM. You should remove anything above that since it will probably degrade your performance.

32bit systems generally can't access more than 4GB max. Why would you use that much ram in a NAS with no GUI anyway? Anything over 1GB is complete overkill... I use 256 MB and it seems plenty fast to me.

For simple smallish disks, yep, you don't need much RAM.

For a 5TB RAID5, I'd say you need 1.5 or 2 GB just to do a fsck. My 2TB needs 1GB.
AND RAID5 can be SLOW if it's set for writethrough caching (due to missing battery), so you'll see a massive boost with big files going to the NAS if you've got the RAM.
Otherwise 1 or 2GB is probably best bang for buk for big volumes.
