Hi,

Has anyone seen this problem and can maybe help please?

I have just purchased a couple of Samsung HD103UJ 1 TB hard drives, and a new NasLite licence for a new machine.
However, I have tried a couple of times, but it only formats the drive to 23MB. Any ideas?

I have trawled this forum and the net for the "-F Samsung" note I see in the logs, but this seems unconnected.

I have also seen references to the same drives on these forums, but no similar problems.

Thanks in advance

You need to setup the OS first and then use the utility on the telnet terminal to go into hdd setup.

Hi,

Forgive my ignorance, but I have no idea what that means :-)

Which OS? and which utility on the Telnet terminal?

I have got two NASLite machines running already, both have got 4 hard drives, and one is a mirror of the other, so I like to think I know the majority of the NASLite menus, but I am just stumped at this issue.

I have done nothing different from the previous two setups, but just can't seem to get the system to see the full capacity of the drives.

It sounds like the telnet utility might help, so any direction on this would be great.

Thanks

if you drive came with utility disk, run it and make sure the drive is not messed up. Check for any jumpersin the wrong place. What kind of drive is it?

Apparently a SATA 3Gbps drive. What motherboard/controller are you using ? Have you tried 1.5Gbps compatibility mode and/or other settings (legacy/IDE/None, etc.) in BIOS ?

Those drives are known to have idiosyncrasies so I'm not surprised. It tends to be associated with certain releases of their firmware. Also, the HD103UJ are definitely not performers. Try turning the SMART probe off and reboot. If you get a chance, please post a syslog. I'm curious of how your machine renders those. I'd also strongly consider running OEM diags if I were you.

I just want to offer my thanks for the people on here who tried to help.

After trawling the web, it appears the problem is with the drives, and is pretty common. After spending a fruitless 9 hours trying everything (including Samsungs own drive formatting and diagnostics software), upgrading the motherboard BIOS, trying 3rd party formatting software, I have given up and am going for a refund.

One of you guys mentioned that these drives had "idiosyncracies". I'd go further, and call them a complete pile of s***e. Adding a couple of SATA hard drives should never have to be this difficult.

Once again, thanks for your help.

PeterC: Are they working (proper size, etc) ? In that case count your lucky stars ... could be a firmware or QualityControl issue ... or incompatibility with some chipsets.
As requested by Tony, both PeterC and gonzonas should post their logs ...
