Last night I installed a 3Ware 8506-12, in the quest for improved performance. When I test using diskwriggler now, I occasionally get:

i.e. the read_frames error.

I also tried Sisoft Sandra and ran a File System test and got a "SiSoftware Sandra Error : Cannot re-open test file! Where is it?" error when the test file was written and the benchmark went to read it.

T: = 2 x 250GB R1; U: = 4 x 500GB R5; V: = 3 x 300GB R5 - all hanging off the 8506-12. The burst throughput is mightily impressive, but it seems buffering/flushing is not keeping up with the RAID card (quoted at circa 90MB/s RAID5 writes).

Nickc, have you tried benchmarking from another client with different specs? And overall can you tell a difference with the new kernel?

Overall I am delighted with the new kernel as, quite simply, it seems to have removed all of the IRQ issues I was having with this motherboard. Previously I had to switch *every* unnecessary service off in BIOS just to get the server to shutdown cleanly (i.e. no kernel panics, RAID rebuilds required, etc). Now, everything is at BIOS default and the server is booting and shutting down smoothly.

I'd be happy to try the new kernel if possible :) I have the very same motherboard and would love to see if this kernel resolves the problems I'm having.

Reads are now actually lower than with the previous kernel :( Any ideas as to what is causing these low numbers, I'm all ears!

Does that make sense? Is this a RAM size issue? If I transfer an 800MB file through FTP the actual numbers are wayyy lower (30MB/s reads & writes). If i I do a simple file copy in windows explorer the reads are 30MB/s and writes are 20MB/s. How does DW numbers compare to FTP & SMB numbers?

Reset the BIOS to defaults and try again. Also, make sure the results are not obscured by the client. Try another client, hopefully with a different NIC type.

I mentioned this to NickC in PM, but to summarize, this kernel will behave better on most stubborn hardware, but it will perform at a level slightly lower than the current stock kernel. It's a compromise that I think may be worth making in order to handle newer hardware better.

As Tony pointed out, if your client is loaded down with crap, your numbers are going to suffer.

I achieved the highest numbers with a Linux client, neither OSX or Windows could come close. Also, you may want to try PassMark and compare your results to mine with a Windows machine, those results are on here somewhere.
