I've just spent a frustrating few hours trying to create an image of my two Naslite USB drives in case they ever fail.
One server is running on 2.04, and the one I have just purchased on 2.06
Is it possible (or even legal) to take an image?

I have done some searching on this group, and have seen one post that recommends using Dubaron Disk Image, or Roadkil's Image. I have tried both with no success.
When I boot with a spare USB key from the image, I get a fail on the Licence number and Unlock key.
I have also tried booting with the original, then trying to save the settings from the PC, but I get a file already exists error. I even tried deleting the .cfg file, but this didn't work either.

Any ideas please?
I now have two machines, mirroring my 2 TBytes of storage, so at a push, I suppose I could set up the failed PC from scratch, reverse the mirroring and recreate the drives again at some point, but it will take a while :)

Thanks in advance.

The best way is to use dd if you really need an image. However, what I'd recommend to simply write the following on a piece of paper in case you need to reconfigure:

1. License ID
2. Unlock Code
3. IP Address
4. Name

Existing drives and mirror settings are all on the drives and will remain.

The simplest way is to just use the NL build software to re-image the keys if you do have a corruption or failure. It only takes a few minuets to do and the setup, as you already know, is fast and simple. Just write down the info for each and keep it on a slip of paper taped to the machine.

I'm a little thick, so let me get this right - let's assume my usb drive fails for some reason.
I just install the software again onto a different stick, and if I insert the correct serial, unlock code etc then the config files will be copied back to the usb, and the original drives and mirrors will be retained?

If that's the case, then I am happy

Many thanks for the info

The config is granular so no hardware-specific info other than unlock is saved to the config file. Disk-specific info is on the drives themselves, so you will not loose your data by recreating the boot device from scratch. The drives and the data stored on them will remain as is. I urge you to try it out in order to put yourself at ease. Simply create another boot USB stick, boot the NAS, do your configuration from scratch, and you'll see your drives as they were with the original boot device. Separating the OS from the data was one of the primary design goals of NASLite.
