I am only seeing around 6-9Mb on a Gigabit lan connection.
From the sys log:-

It is all shown as unavailable ???!!???

I have just updated to latest 2.06 version to allow my usb kvm to work, but it was the same on 2.04 previously.

FTP tests.
Local lan, same switch, same file on different servers.

Naslite-2 server
ftp> mget *.iso
mget smoothwall-express-3.0-Backup-20080618-i386.iso? y

so from my other desktop machine I can get 27Mb/s where as from the nas server I can only manage 9Mb/s??
The drives are set to DMA mode in the bios. Machine is a 1600 Duron with 512Mb.
There are only the 4 machines on the lan, these 3 and the firewall (smoothwall), all connected using cat 6 cable, no jumbo frames enabled.

How can I get the speed up on the Naslite server?

Do you get the same results if you do the test using x-over cable? Rtl cards have been a mixed bag for me and are far from the fastest out there. Try intel or 3com if you have one available.

I tried an intel 1000/mt but it wasn't recognised and that is all I have.

That Intel card should have worked like a charm. Try rebuilding the box again with the Intel NIC in it and see if it is seen.

It only comes up with EEPROM data invalid when I put the Intel card in, however why should it need changed when the Ubuntu desktop is using an on board RTL nic with no issues and the speeds are correct ?

Ok put the intel card into another machine and tested using Xbuntu, got an ip fine.
Shutdown the nas box, installed the intel card. Now shows on the status screen:-

But the ftp is still slow:-

So no real difference in the speed between the D-link and Intel cards. only diff. is that the status shows on the network screen now.

Any other ideas?

We will not be able to help if we can't get an idea of where the problem is coming from so post up your entire log file after a boot and transfer.

Since no new replies, have tried moving the slot the nic is in, but no difference in the speed.
All the "extra's" in the bios are off (serial etc)

Anybody have any suggestions, or do I blow this away and install Ubuntu on it?

I see allot of drive seek errors in the log. I might look at the cables for starts. Also you may have a PS that is sagging and causing allot of problems. Then maybe a look at the controllers for the HDD and finally at the MB it's self. That would be my starting places.

I have had a couple of boards that just would not perform no matter what I did under NL. I have personally had much more luck with Intel based boards than AMDs for reasons unknown. My first machine was based on a P100, then I went to a P200MMX, followed by a AMD K6/2 400. all three performed great with a bit of a boost in performance as I upgraded. I did have a Duron 800 machine that just wouldn't run stable, I know the issue was with the MB. The next upgrade was an Athlon 1800, it worked but was again not a stable platform. I am currently running a P4 Celeron 2000/400 on an Intel desktop MB and this is by far the best platform yet. I have several terabytes of transfer through the box with not one issue, all at gigabit speeds. I have been lucky in that the NICs I have used have all been supported and just run out of the box. I only use 3Com and Intel as a rule since I pick them up at the local swap meets and surplus stores for REAL CHEAP.

I mention the above in the hopes of pointing out that it can sometimes take a bit of trial and error to get to where one wants with this hardware but once you do hit the target it is so sweet!

Lets see what Tony and/or Ralph have to throw in.

Hardware performance can vary greatly for a variety of reasons. Most consumer-grade boards are designed for use with Windows, so BIOS and associated drivers are designed with that in mind. There is a lot to be said for drivers designed specifically for a given hardware. Another thing to consider, just because a board has impressive specs, it's performance may not always meet expectations, regardless of the operating system.

Set the BIOS to defaults to make sure bus timing and such is correct, then turn off com, lpt, audio, etc. that is not used by NASLite and give that a try.

Another thought, the transfer specs posted above are suspiciously in line with 100T networks, so I'd take a serious look at cabling, switches, etc. Try crossover to an equivalent client and see what you get.

Well having spent all day trying different m/b's and trying to get them to boot from usb, I have ended up with my old board.
HOWEVER NOW IT SAYS CAN'T FIND CONFIGURATION DEVICE and SHUTS DOWN. Even though it has just booted from it.
Tried a different flash disk and it says the same.
HELP !!!

If your old board has been out of a PC for a while then there is the possibility that when you think that you are saving the BIOS settings - it doesn't. Also, some boards "lose" the boot-from-USB option if the machine is ever switched on with the USB device removed.
