I just built a naslite2 hdd on a celeron 2.3 ghz machine with a 10/100/1000 trendnet (realtek 8169sc chip).
But the performance is poor. I have another naslite1+ CDD box, with a much older 400MHz P2 machine that is much faster

Max rate on the old naslite1+ with large files was about 6500Kb/sec
Max rate on the new naslite2 hdd with large files is 1500KB/sec
Slow rates on the new naslite2 hdd were as slow as 200Kb/sec

I thought I'll change the network card and try something else, but the new naslite2 hdd needs registration. So, I figured I need to bring this up with the guru's before I spend another few hours on this.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Have you switched off all onboard devices (apart from those that you require....) to try to rule out IRQ issues?

I think that NIC works just fine. You need to do as NickC said and turn off all devices that are not used on the MB. Also try moving the NIC if the problems persist. I built a NL2.04 box for a friend and he was getting 25MB/sec transfer with those same cheap NICs.

Nick and Mike, thank you for your suggestions. There is a network problem that needs to be fixed - its probably on the switch, which is temporarily circumvented. Now I have to get Naslite2 working again, and it is upset that I changed nic cards on it. This has to wait for another weekend.

You can unlock many times as you need to as the devs have said in other posts. One thing to check too is if you are using ide drives, make sure you have a supported ide controller. Somewhere it said that if the generic ide driver is used, performance will be poor without dma.
