So it looks like its not just a NASlite, but also with FreeNAS. Is there any form of a work around?

Thanks

I take it that you don't have a PC with an IDE CD-ROM drive in it?

I'm not sure, but someone may have been able to achieve this by forcing the SATA interface to some form of legacy IDE mode by changing BIOS settings, then changing them back to get best performance from the SATA HDD's.

I have the same problem. Relatively new small form factor PC, SATA drives (DVD & HD) with no BIOS support for legacy IDE DVD drive. Is there any option for getting NASLite-2 HDD to install from a SATA DVD drive? I get the same errors noted above. I read the other thread and it appears only an IDE drive or changing BIOS to legacy mode are the only options but I don't seem to have either. Client only has this machine available for file sharing services. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I really don't know if this works: Copy the NASLite install files onto a formatted, clean USB (flash)drive, boot from USB to install NASLite; change boot sequence back to your dedicated NASLite hard drive after install.

Thanks for the idea. I'm skeptical it will work, though since I tried the following.

I have a USB converter cable that I use to recover drives. It connects any ATA or SATA drive via USB (very slick converter cable for anyone working on PC's a lot). I changed the BIOS to boot from USB, hooked-up an old ATA CD-ROM drive through this USB converter cable, booted from the old ATA CD drive with the NASLite CD loaded (old CD drive connected via USB converter cable), and it booted the NASLite software. However, the boot-up still failed when loading the CD drive step. I even tried disabling the on-board SATA DVD drive in the BIOS, but I think NASLite wants a configured IDE drive and when it can't find it, it fails and shuts-down the install.

Frustrating...

You are right. It will not work since the installer will look for a CD-ROM with the correct footprint. If the target host machine does not have an IDE ATAPI CD-ROM and the BIOS does not have a "Legacy Mode" option, then the best alternative is to install Naslite-2 HDD onto the boot drive using another machine that meets the specs.

Hope that helps...

I'll give that a shot. One last question: if I take the drive from this machine and hook it up to another (older) PC with the proper drives, get NASLite-HDD installed, then put the drive back in the newer machine, will I have to have any "legacy" hardware (ATA/IDE CD-ROM, etc.) on the newer machine to do updates or when booting/rebooting the PC?

Thanks again for the responses from everyone.
