What are the benefits if any to applying journaling to my disks (500gb SATA Seagate Barracuda)

so it is a good thing...

is it ok to apply journaling to a drive that already has data on it that wasn't originally setup for journaling?

further more, as journaling provides better data intergrity amongst other things, why wouldnt drives be journaled from the get go?

it is a good thing.

its safe to apply to a HD with data on.

Tony or Ralph would be better suited to answer the last question.

Disks installed under NL2 are journaled from the start, it is migrated disks from NL1 that aren't and require that the journal be applied. In fact it is explained in the management console to that effect.

Yes it is safe to apply the journal to existing EXT2 file systems, I have done it with a number of migrated disks.
