I've had a NL2 box running for ~ 6 months with no problems. I have 1 IDE drive and 2 SATA drives (running off a PCI-SATA expansion card.) Not sure of the MB, but it's late 1990s era. The two SATA drives were 300GB each, and were just purchased in December 2007.

My wife called me at work last week and said "Your computer is making funny noises, I'm turning it off." When I powered it back up, I found that one of the SATA drives had obviously gone south (grinding sounds, although it seemed to still spin up.)

I took out that drive, and hoped to have my NAS back online with the remaining two drives. However, neither of the two other drives were being recognized. NL2 would boot up, but would FAIL on one of the bootup steps (drive mounting, maybe?).

I've tried connecting just one or the other of my two drives to the box, but it doesn't seem to like anything. I still get the same FAIL error.

I don't have another spare drive kicking around to plug in and see if it would mount.

Any thoughts on trying to get this back up and running? I fortunately have a backup of all the important stuff (I think) that I had on the box. I saw another post referred to using Knoppix. I think I have a copy around someplace, if people think that'd be useful at all.

THanks for any help
Matt

Sounds like a bad controller to me, try hanging one of the drives off of the on board PATA and remove the card, then see if it boots.

So i pulled the PCI-SATA card, and the IDE drive now seems to be OK.

This is the SMART report for the IDE drive, does it look ok? I tried connecting the seemingly good SATA drive through an extrnal USB enclosure, but I still can't get it to mount :-(
