These errors started showing up in my system log a few days ago. Coincidentally, I'm having problems working with one of my NAS disks. I'm assuming the two are related.

Anybody have any insight into what the below means and what I need to do to correct it?

Feb 16 14:01:30 user.crit kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sd(8,17)): ext3_readdir: bad entry in directory #23212226: rec_len % 4 != 0 - offset=512, inode=3363402364, rec_len=5662, name_len=249

Thanks.

Ray.

Set that drive to "--" so it's not mounted and reboot the server. After that, do a complete check and repair of the drive and make sure to check for bad blocks. Let the test complete for it will take some time. After that, set the drive back to "rw" and reboot. Things should be back to normal.

hmm. After unmounting and rebooting, the only available option on this drive is to reformat it. All the other options are "*" out.

I'm assuming that means the drive is not recoverable, or do I need to do something else via a linux boot disk?

FYI - the drive in question is attached via USB to the NAS box.

Thanks for any additional guidance.

USB can be a pain. When it works, it works, an when it doesn't, watch out! Not sure what's the problem but what i usually do is take the drive out of the enclosure, drop it in a tray and try to fix the fs without usb in the middle. I think that if you are not getting the check and repair option, naslite thinks the drive is not formatted, so forcing a check using a live cd ala knoppix may be an option.

I have a usb/fw enclosure that i use so when possible, i use fw. Seems better than usb. Less flaky for sure.

Thanks for the tips. This is the only USB disk that I have, and I've been wanting to get away from it for speed, etc. Just haven't gotten around to creating another NAS box.

Thanks again.
