Hope everyone is having a great holiday...!!

I'm moving my system from a 3 slot Asus board to a older slower 5/6 slot board. More resources and control, or at least I hope.

First and main concern is the following,

Dec 26 00:28:36 user.err kernel: PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 4 of device 00:1f.3

And another is my boot media is C/F and appears to cause several errors;

hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

It boots ok, I may need to adjust the boot disk params a bit..

Anyway here is the full log..

Turn dma for the CF off in the bios.

Nothing I change seems to make that go away, guessing its the CF. Maybe not able to perform up to this spec.. might try another card but as long as this appears benign at this point, its booting and holding data, I'll try that later.

Is it possible smartctl might be hitting this drive even tho its disabled for that drive?

Still worried somewhat about the

Dec 26 20:50:47 user.err kernel: PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 4 of device 00:1f.3

that I see..

I think I picked up on something about possible memory config issue but naslite seems to see it all.. any way to determine what device its having an issue with? I have disabled all that i can that I don't need..

My new setup is giving exactly the same hda error(i'm assuming that HDA is the boot drive). I've just changed booting from a CF card to a 2.5" HDD as i had a load of problems, and i assumed it was because i was using a 40 pin IDE > 2.5" cable and get a bios boot message about not having an 80 pin cable. I'm testing mine at the minute, so i'll see if it causes any problems.

hda message is the CF adapter, have ordered what appears to be a better SD to ide adapter. If that does not clear it then, guess I can let that one be..

Worried about the other error "Cannot allocate resource region 4" message, might be related.. I might boot with a live linux cd and see if I can find out what it is trying to probe.. My 1u dell box running smoothwall shows "00:0f.1 IDE interface Broadcom OSB4 IDE Controller". I know its a different MB, but I would think there are some "given" points or structure here and that it could be this cheep CF adapter causing both weird responses from the system..

Would be nice to be able to "shell" into this a find out..

Also Tony did respond with some ideas I can try..

Dude, in the BIOS make sure you set the IDE channel the CF is on to PIO or the lowest IDE speed the BIOS will allow you to do. CFs are dumb that way and will cause problems when you try to address them with DMA enabled or with LB.

Thanks, I did read your post and gave it a shot, none of the settings I tried changed the outcome. Its a ~2002 Asus board and since 478 boards with any slots to speak of can be found I grabbed this one. Won't even boot from USB :(

------------

Wait, did you say LB, meaning LBA??? Almost sure I checked that one.. might try again.. I did everything I could that would address a PIO/DMA.

The same happened to me today... I didn't change anything... Did you find a solution ?
