Hello,

its my first contact with NASlite.
My hardware is a Intel PIII 733 Mainboard, a Gigabit NIC, a CF/IDE-Adapter with a 128MB Flash-Card and a Samsung HD501LJ 500GB Sata disk for Date. SATA Controller is a SIL 3114 or a VIA 6421 on test. Till now i test with FreeNAS (based on FreeBSD) but i'm not so happy.
I want to test NASLite on my system with install on the CF-Card but which version? For USB? Have a cd-rom drive vor this system but no floppy or usb-Stick.

Thanks for your help.
Thorsten

Hello thkogel,
I have a config like yours and use NASLite on a CF with a IDE adapter. That's the way I proceeded:
USB attach the CF to the PC through a card-reader
- boot on the NASLite-2 USB CD-ROM
- choose the ‘Super-floppy’ and not the ‘Fixdisk’ option, I tried ‘fixdisk’ first and I got some HEX codes as error messages (USBX: dx=....).
- dismount the CF from thr card reader and put it on the CF-IDE adapter
- boot on the harddisk (the CF card)
..and it should work !!
Regards,
DH
PS: by the way, why aren't you happy with FreeNas ?

as above but not all card reader/writers work - thare are a few threads here outlining problems

so if you cannot write to the cf card try another reader

i had a couple of the multi card readers - neither would write to the cf card in Naslite - finished up with a dedicated cf card reader writer

another way is to write to a usb stick and copy to the cf card in a multi card reader - again there are threads here detailing that - that was my first success but its fiddly and i could only do it using a linux system

I don't have a cf card reader. Only the CF/IDE-Adapter. Is there no other way?

About the problems with FreeNAS read her:

you need a cf card reader - does not need to be on your system - do you have access to one anywhere else

Hmmm, i have a two Windows with IDE and Sata and a Dreambox.
If i connect the CF-card with the IDE-adapter and put it to windows pc?
I can copy files to the CF-Card over CF/IDE-adapter. I also have a ubuntu 7.1 desktop live cd here. But NO Cardreader.

you are writing it as a boot disc - so copying will not work i think - there may be other ways but i dont know any and buying a card reader [whilst cheap] may not do what you want, as i said many do not work

time to see what friends have and see if you can do something on their machine if they have a reader

NASLite-2 HDD should be available shortly. Perhaps it will be the best fit for your setup.

How long ist shortly ? A week / a month ? :? :D

perhaps, i can use a old floppy drive and the cd version to test it and if the hdd version is available i can switch to cf-card system.

by the way, what are your opinion about freeNAS?
FreeNAS vs. NASlite ?

thats nice, because I just bought 2-3 weeks NASLite2-USB before u released the HDD version, now the funny part is, that I get an offer email to upgrade that NASLite2-USB to HDD (with from you site does have exactly the same features like the USB, besides that this is directly from the HDD) for just only 20 $, i think this is pretty unfair to offer something like this after u just recently purchuased the USB version, and u did not have anything else to choose from.
