I am currently running a RAID-5 for non critical data but want to add one disk for critical data. Trying to decide if I should get 2 SATA drives and use NASLite rsync or add 2 drives to my RAID card (ADAPTEC 2610SA) and set up as RAID-1. Any advantage to one over the other? If I use RAID-1 and the RAID card dies can I just pull the disks and connect them to the MB or do they have to put back on an identical brand RAID card to work?
Thanks

If your RAID card (ADAPTEC 2610SA)dies you "CAN NOT" I just pull the disks and connect them to the MB. you need to use the same ADAPTEC 2610SA RAID card and make sure they are at the same firmware level (BIOS).
How many Disks are you using with your RAID 5?. You can use 4 and have a hot spare or you can go to RAID 10 is more secure but less performance.

Thanks for the info. So when using RAID do most people buy a backup card? Seems like it could be difficult to find another card with same BIOS if there is a card failure.

All depends how important is your data. I use ADAPTEC 2410SA with 4X 500GB Seagate Hard disk to Make a RAID 10 and keep one extra card on stock.
