using naslite usb on a CF card in a pci/cf adaptor

has started not to clean boot - symptoms are - power the machine up - bios does not see cf card as hard drive so will not boot

power down - remove cf card from adaptor - insert card into same adaptor - power up - bios sees cf card as hard drive and boots fine

so what is it

pci/cf adaptor is new - well a couple of months old

cf card is old - bought off ebay - fujifilm cf card 64meg

machine is old but is reliable - with a hard drive as the boot device it works 100%

any thoughts

Check how the BIOS identifies the CF and then force it instead of using Auto as you probably are right now. That, and check ato see if your adapter has any master/slave jumpers on it and set.

bios is set to auto as you guess - it does recognise it most of the time - but as i said earlier now and then it does not find it,

what do you mean by force it

adaptor has jumpers - device is set to master - which corresponds to bios auto - slave in bios is off

Some adapters may not need a jumper if alone and without slave so check it out. What i mean by force the settings is for you to set the BIOS with the correct settings for the CF rather than expect it to autodetect and configure the parameters.

hmmm thought i had solved this - changed the cf card - found another one in a drawer - copied the software from one to the other and off it went

has worked for a week and suddenly failed

did notice when i copied the card i got an error - but it copied - so wondering if it is that

nervous about starting again but am i correct in thinking if i do do a clean install of Naslite it will find all my drives and mount them - so it may take a while but i will not lose anything

A new install will find the drives, as they are presumably already formatted then you just have to mount them and away you go!

NASLite will in no way attempt to change the contents of your HDs. You can start fresh with the new install, configure, unlock and off you go. Things should be right back to normal.

will be ordering a new cf/ide adaptor just in case it is that

still having problems - works sometimes - then just fails to boot

had a thought from 'dimension' that the cf card may be too slow - i thought they were all equal but maybe not

casd i am using is branded fuji - bios finds it as samsung - 64meg

what do other users use ???
