I'm a newbie to NASLite, so sorry if these are dumb questions. But I can't find the answers in the manual or in the forums.

The admin screens say that the time should be set to UTC so that timestamps are correct. Why does this matter? The only timestamps I see with UTC are in the Web pages from the NASLite server. Aren't the timestamps for files set by the operating system on a client computer?

The preceding is probably a trivial question, but it is relevant since I'm also trying to understand the instructions about Gateway and Time Server settings in the Network settings area. The manual warns not to set up a valid Gateway to avoid a security problem, but then also suggests setting up a Time Server. Is there really a problem with a Gateway if my LAN is behind a hardware firewall that limits/directs incoming access? The only way I can think of to use a Time Server without a Gateway is to have my Ubuntu system set up as a Time Server.

Thanks for clarifying my bemusement.

Operating system locale support will usually account for the time offset associated with a given locale and allow for proper translation to and from UTC. In practice, it makes little difference if all clients share the same offset, however if there are clients with different locales accessing the same NASLite-2 server, then a proper UTC setting becomes significant.

In theory, there is absolutely nothing dangerous in setting a gateway for your NASLite-2 server, provided there is a clear understanding of what you are trying to achieve. If you are operating behind a firewall as you are describing, then you are correct in questioning the “danger” of a gateway. In short, if your LAN uses non-routable IPs and your firewall is not forwarding any specific ports to your NASLite-2 server, then there is no way for an outside request to reach the server.
