Hi!

one basic question:
Running naslite 2.04
Pentium 166 Mhz
96 MB Ram
3x 250 GByte HDs
Gigabit Ethernet

The transfer speed is below 80 MBit
Why is it so slow :?:
The upgrade from 100MBit to 1000MBit results only in a small increase of the transfer-speed.

Is the CPU too slow or the memory too low ...

Any experience in that?

Thomas

My guess is that the MB that you are using limits your disk read/write speed. Often slow bus/IDE speed is the primary bottleneck. One way to counteract slow disk write speeds is to use a lot of ram to buffer the transferred data. That approach is best if you have lots of small files that you write to in bursts and/or lots of people accessing the server. Reads however are usually as fast as the slowest link in the chain, which in your case is probably the IDE transfer speed.

Hope that helps…

I have several old computers lying around. But with slower speeds, I'm also considering buying a Dell Optiplex 745 that has gigabit card, Sata motherboard/hard drive. In the long run, would I be better with this and would it be compatible with the Naslite?
