got naslite 2 usb - wanted that as i did not want to rely on a floppy which both the cd version needs and i would also need to boot from usb - i would need a kicker disc so the facility to boot from compact flash in a cf/ide adaptor seemed an excellent idea -

so - burnt the cd - put the cf card in a usb adaptor and -NOTHING- could not write to the card -had read of some compatibility problems - so tried it on another system - just the same - tried another card reader - no better

tried to burn to a usb stick in the same card reader - no problem - transfered the software perfectly

tried to write to the cf card in both card readers on a windows system - NO PROBLEM - also tried the cf card in a camera - worked fine

so card works - card readers [two] work in windows - so what is wrong

booted from the usb stick on a laptop and it booted naslite fine - so had the idea to copy the contents of the usb stick to the cf card - tried a couple of programs suggested in another thread - did not work for me

now am reduced to a kicker disc that i do not want to use or pay for a cdd version - that i also dont want to use

common factor in fault process is naslite software - everything else works -

card readers are 2 a penny but having tried 2 - [generic but different] i do not feel like buying more to get nowhere

any help much appreciated

tony

How about booting a Live Unix CD (Knoppix, DSL, etc) and using "dd" to copy the image on the USB stick direct to the CF card (while it is attached to IDE) ? Would that work ? I am not a Linux expert, so someone else maybe could supply the exact paramenters needed for the "dd" command ?

(Plus other necessary commands, such as allowing write operation to the CF /dev/hd??, etc).

:) Georg

georg - you are a mind reader - did that about an hour ago and it worked

for those who may be struggling -in my words - but as georg said

installed Naslite 2 - usb to a SD card in a card reader - would assume most cards would work - why CF do not is a mystery - however - then booted a cd based version of linux - 'Puppy linux' in my case - never used linux before so assume any would work

used disc copy in linux to copy software from SD card to CF card - put CF card in cf/ide board and Naslite booted

for ref and it may be relevant to the writers of Naslite

the SD card in the card reader booted naslite on a computer that would boot from usb - HOWEVER - the cf card with the naslite software installed would not - it got to the first line 'ok lets load the kernel' or whatever the message is - it then locked up - why - i have no idea - but to my mind the problem - or part of it must be in the software - then again i may be wrong

anyway it works
