I'm assuming you initialized the logical drive from the LSI bios correct? NASLite see's the logical drive, you should be able to format it from within the NASLite storage options.

Yes, it initialized without any errors. I can see the logical drive listed by the Megaraid bios whenever the pc is booted.. the bios sees the adapter as a bootable device... the only thing I haven't tried is to format the drive via some other method. I'll try that tonite just to confirm that the logical drive is working fine.... but I assumed the message "detected 1 logical drives" meant that NASLite-2 is seeing the drive on the array... just don't know why it's not being listed under the storage options...

Do you have the LSI or the Dell version of this card?

mine was the dell and I had similar problems
after I flashed the card with the LSI firmware it all came together

Some extra reading material here

WELL... sorry for the late reply but some updates and additional questions.

First, my card is a Dell version and I did flash it and that did resolve the logical drive problem.. thank you totalchaos...

However, I now see other issues... ones for which I don't think there is a fix and one that hopefully someone can help me with.

No-Answer Issues

1. The LSI card will not let me put 5x500gb Pata drives into one Raid5 array... it will only allow 4 drives.. when I try to add the 5th it says that the logical drive will be too large to handle.. I researched this to death and found no answers... I'm guessing there is some logical-drive size limit on this DAC. So unless I get a new DAC I'll have to live with 4x500 + 500gb HS... but I was expecting to have about 1.7TB useful storage.

2. I did not realize the nature of the NASLite distro and that things like network-card driver tweaks were not possible.. for my type of data being able to run jumbo frames like 4k to 9k would improve transfer speeds by a decent amount.

Hopefull-Answer Issue

I am seeing much slower transfer speeds via windows file transfer when writing to the NAS vs reading from the NAS... however, when reading/writing via FTP to the NAS, the performance is consistent. The difference via windows-file-transfer is HUGE.. reading a 600mb file will happen within expected time (less than 30 seconds) but writing the same file will take 5 minutes.. I am hoping there is some tweaking that can be made to windows or on the nas to fix my problem.

THANKS!!

Couple of things:

Jumbo frames will not help you much in the case of NASLite. In fact it will probably diminish performance. That at least is the indication we have received from our benchmarks. Ralph can probably elaborate on that.

As far as existing performance, I’d suggest you start by using proper benchmarking software and do the tests with a crossover cable between the NASLite machine and your client before attempting to troubleshoot. At the gigabit level, network infrastructure, switches, other clients, etc. can introduce latency and other anomalies. You need to have some performance numbers that eliminate those from the equation. Also, take a look at network RX errors. You should have none or very few.

You should also vary the client to verify that the problem is in fact on the NASLite end and not on the client end.

Hope that helps.
