Hi,

As my very fast servers LAN card is not accepted by NL, I found at last the oldest computer in the house and could start NL2-USB with a kicker floppy.

Everything starts nice and clean, no errors, the lan card is found, the IP and sub masks set etc. When I look at the connection status, the connection is active and seems OK.

BUT... it can't ping anything with the computer and the computer is not seen on the LAN.

The general setup of the lan is a modem router that is connected to the ADSL and gateway that gives out the IPs, then there is another modem router (NetGear) that is used as a switch and all the computers and the printer are connected to the NetGear (WiFi and 100MHz câble LAN).

I suspect some port not open but I don't know where to look for.

All computers can Ping the Gateway but not the NL computer.

Any help will be useful.

TIA and best regards.

Have you setup the IP address that the NAS is to use? You have to do this manually, it cannot be assigned by DHCP.

In terms of access, have you set the NAS workgroup to be the same as the rest of the PC's on the network?

Hi Nick,

Yes I have. The IP is unique 192.168.0.20 and the mask 255.255.255.0 the same as the LAN, same for the workgroup name.

No change if I put the gateway IP or leave it to 0.0.0.0

Theorically it should work but....

Thanks for your help

Robby

I didn't quite get the question. :?: Yes the cable is connected and the connection lights of the NetGear and the NIC are green.

I will try to change the cable and test again, just in case but I don't really think this is the problem.

Regards

Have you set up a server protocol?

Hi Robby,

There are a few obvious reasons why the problem may be occurring as follows:

1. If the machine has multiple NICs, you must make sure the correct NIC is selected in the admin interface.

2. Make sure the IP given to the NAS is outside the DHCP range handed by your router, but still on the same network per your netmask.

3. Obviously hardware can also be a cause so make sure the NIC and the cable are good. Reseat the connectors to make sure all contacts are good.

There are many more potential causes, but the above 3 are perhaps the most likely ones I can think of without having access to your hardware. If you can ping the router from other machines, then try doing so from NASLite. If both the clients and the NAS can ping the router then they should be able to ping each other. If not, you need to look at the router.

Hope that helps.

The computer has a WiFi card but the connection status qave 100MHz so I suppose it was on the good NIC. I changed from "Fast" to "First" NIC but nothing changed? I'll try to rmove the WiFi card so that there'll be only one NIC

Didn't get what you mean by "outside the DHCP range handed by your router"... The router has a large range of IPs that it can give out but not so many computers at home so 192.168.0.20 will never be given out to another computer. Did I understand right?

The cable was OK as we have installed and downloaded SP2 for XP Pro with the same cable (not the same computer!). Maybe a connection problem with the cable... I hadn't checked that? If this was the problem, shame on me and my son (we do computers together :D

As for the pings: No ping at all (answer or send) from the NL box. All the orher computerscan ping.

We'll play around some more this WE and I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for your time and help

Hi robrub

I am in the same situation as you; I can't see my NL server and I cannot ping it.

I have proven that my hardware works OK, it seems that NasLite is the problem.

For more info see my post NIC not recognised

BillP

p.s. Would have given a link to the post but cannot get the BB URL code to work!

Um, maybe your card is not supported dude. That does happen on occasion you know. Did you try installing another PCI NIC? Is the onboard NIC on your 486 board ISA or PCI? Naslite does not support ISA stuff.

Hi dimension

Here we have the answer 'Naslite does not support ISA'!!!!!!! My NIC is on the motherboard, but as the MB has just a single ISA slot the NIC must be on the ISA bus.

It would be nice if the NASLite Basic System Requirements Web page could be updated to spell out 'Naslite does not support ISA' It might save other users from exploring this dead end.

Thanks for your help

BillP

From the naslite description on the website.

Quote:
Basic System Requirements

NASLite+ is a network file server, so a fast computer is usually not necessary.

Basic requirements are:

486DX or better processor
PCI bus
32M or more of RAM
1 to 4 IDE fixed disk drives
Bootable CD-ROM drive
Conventional floppy disk drive
PCI or on-board network interface adapter

Says right there PCI nic card required, hardly a trap. Gotta love people who don't want to read.

The following would of done the job:

"Says right there PCI nic card required"

Perhaps you felt it was necessary to not only make it obvious that he did not read the specs properly but also to point out how stupid he was for not doing so? This forum would be a better place if we could refrain from using such attitude, agreed? :)

That reply of mine was a sincere attempt to make a point without giving you attitude. If I failed, that is unfortunate :?
