I have a 'remote' PC running Linux Ubunto O/S. The primary Drive has the O/S and the Slave is a former 200 GB NL Drive that I want to use as a Remote Naslite Drive. The 'properties' of that NL Drive, however, say 'you are not the owner'... .

Nl sees the Remote Drive, thus:-

192.168.1.4 Host IP is valid
192.168.1.4 Host RPC is able to receive.
192.168.1.4 Host is not exporting storage volumes.

Can anyone linux savvy, very kindly tell me why I don't have 'user rights' and how to change it to be usable? Maybe through ''chmod' in the terminal window? I installed Ubunto with both Drives in place and expected them to be seen as a common storage system.

many thanks for any comments! jeffjohn

Ah, got stumped by that myself. :)

You must make sure that the exported folder on your Ubuntu box is UID 98 and GID 98 in order to match the Naslite user. Otherwise, Naslite has no permission to touch those files. What you can also do instead of changing the UID/GID (think about it before doing) is to chmod 777 all of the folder so Naslite can read and write to that area.

It works like a champ otherwise.

suppose I could sign in as User 98 in group 98? would it all work then? sounds to easy to be possible! I'll try the 'chown route' Ithink! Certainly all the displayed NL ownerships are 98s. thanks greatly jeffjohn!

ok..firstly I would like to connect via Remote to my Ubunto Linux PC on which I have a small 'system' HD and a 200 GB drive from the naslite. All directories are set as shared NSF and chmod 777 level of access . User is 'jeff' and group is 'jeff' (also tried root/root). I appreciate I won't get access to the files as they are 'owned' 98/98 naslite. But I can work (chown/chgrp) on them later.

Naslite reports:-
192.168.1.7 Host IP is valid
192.168.1.7 Host RPC is unable to receive or not available.

N/A 0 remote volumes mounted.

I have saved Remote IP info and rebooted NL with Remote up and running. Ubunto system can access the NL files and router network without problem; music playing in my garage!
Can anyone advise me how to get the Remote seen by NL. I'm a Linux virgin but have waded through the manuals to no avail!

Many thanks jeff

I think 192.168.1.7 Host RPC is unable to receive or not available means that Naslite does not see the Ubuntu box or NFS is not available. If Ubuntu was on when Naslite went looking for it, then chances are that it is not exporting files through NFS.

How are you setting your NFS exports in Ubuntu?

humble appologies dimension et al.

I changed my printer and DHCP had re-allocated Linux PC the vacated IP hence NL was on the former address. I ran isconfig and found the problem! it is always the 'obvious' ones!

retires to the corner with a glass of Merlot!

thanks Jeff

Right! Have started from scratch! Over-wrote and re-partitioned hdb 2nd int drive, ext3. Made 2 direcrories in it. Chmod 777 Drive and sub-directories and set chown to jeff. Mounted Drive and checked permissions were drwx rwx rwx rwx. Shared drive and directories: 'NFS' using IP of Naslite 192.168.1.30 and network, 192.168.1.255/ 255.255.255.0.

on NL, I re-defined Remote as 192.168.1.4, saved, rebooted NL.

Remote seen but not accessed.

NL says:-

192.168.1.4 Host IP is valid
192.168.1.4 Host RPC is unable to receive or not available.

Can anyone advise what I might be missing? I did have my new disk visible briefly, but not after rebooting of Remote. Have I missed a 'save' function , or what? I used gpartition, chown, chmod, mkdir; as I say it was working briefly.

I'd appreciate any guidance whatsoever!! many thanks jeff

I do now have some access to my remote linux PC.

remote status shows the system 192.168.1.4-jeff, including this excerpt:-

drwxr-xr-x 1000 1000 Jun 14 14:07 <DIR> .update-manager-core
drwxr-xr-x 1000 1000 Jun 14 13:50 <DIR> .update-notifier
drwxr-xr-x 1000 117 Jun 14 13:50 <DIR> Desktop
drwxrwxrwx 1000 117 Jun 17 15:51 <DIR> ubunto
-rw------- 1000 1000 Jun 18 08:39 2177 B .ICEauthority
-rw------- 1000 1000 Jun 18 08:39 121 B .Xauthority
-rw------- 1000 1000 Jun 18 10:21 2956 B .bash_history

The directory I want to use is labelled 'ubunto'. I guess it is the strange ownership and group setting that is causing my problems. when I examine its properties I have jeff:admin as owner.

Please help me if you can! I want Ubunto to be listed on the Naslite http lisings with my onboard drives.

thanks jeffjohn

What version of Ubuntu are you using? Older versions of NFS don't play well with newer versions.

Ralph - thanks for your kind assistance. My Ubuntu distro 7.04.0 with linux kernel 2.6.2.0 - 16 generic, shows my 5 shared folders (NFS). However I have failed to export same via Naslite. Under share I used the NL IP address 192.168.1.30 and also the network broadcast 192.168.1.255/ 255.255.255.0.

Stumped as to what else I can do! n.b. those directories are 'empty' does that matter?

I am off to France away from my Linux for 10 weeks tomorrow, but shall be on here daily.

Regards and thanks for a brilliant product and service. jeffjohn

Try/Verify the following in the specified order:

1. Start the Ubuntu NFS services and make sure NFS exports on your Ubuntu machine are available and remotely accessible.
2. Make sure the NASLite-2 configuration has NFS services enabled and the remote server IP (The IP of your Ubuntu box) is set. Only the IP is necessary without a netmask since the Ubuntu machine must be visible per the NASLite netmask or an associated gateway.
3. With the Ubuntu machine running and NASLite properly configured, reboot NASLite. The remote NFS shares will be detected and mounted as necessary. At that time permissions will be in effect, so the above post by dimension will hold true.

If you need to troubleshoot, you can use the NASLite admin menu. Under “Tools and Utilities” / ”Show Remote NFS Exports” ( Option T / Option 8 ) you can check if the Ubuntu NFS exports are visible. Just enter the IP of the Ubuntu machine and see what comes back.

Hope that helps.

Hi Tony

Linux shows all the wanted Directories under 'shared folders'

"show remote NFS exports" in NL shows the whole stack of NFS shared files; the ones I want.

Status Page html shows:-

(in black) 192.168.1.4-jeff
192.168.1.4-media

/media/ should contain the shared directories I want. but has dir ..
if I try opening that I go back up a level.

(-jeff has a system files)

Everything seems to be basically correct, but no (blue) shared files shown on Status Page.

Hope this helps!! jeffjohn

OK, so you are connecting to the exports but NASLite does not have sufficient permissions to access the files on your Ubuntu exports. That is why things are black and not clickable. The only way to correct that is on the Ubuntu end. You have to make sure the NFS exports are RW for NASLite as well as make sure the exported folders and files have permissions that make them accessible.
