Hi -

I was using version 1.2 with 3 hard drives, 200, 200, and a 250 GB. All was well. I added a new 500GB Seagate to replace one of the 200GB units and all was well after formatting. I simulated a power failure and on reboot, the 500GB drive fails and needs to be reformatted. The older drives go through diagnostic tests and eventually mount.

I then upgraded to the newest version, and the results are the same. Any ideas on why the 500GB drive will not come back after a failure. Obviously, putting data on this drive in this condition is very risky. Looking for any assistance you can provide.

I have 3 x Seagate ST3500630A's running in RAID5 on a 3Ware 7500-8 and have never encountered a problem like yours. As I switch off the box every night I quickly ramp up the on/off cycle count and my drives check themselves at boot approximately once a month each (thankfully usually on different boots).

Have you tried disconnecting the other drives and trying again - purely to rule out PSU problems..... Also, try a known working drive data cable.

Best of luck!

If I power down from the menu, the 500GB drive is fine. Only when I simulate a power failure - just shut the machine down, does it fail on reboot.

This is the same box that ran fine under 1.2 with the other three drives, so the cables should be good. I guess I will try swapping cables anyway to rule things out. Kind of frustrating as I want to be able to use the larger drive, but only after I convince myself it will be there reliably.

If you do not shut down properly, NASLite will force filesystem verification on boot. It takes time but is necessary to ensure the safety of your data. Just allow time for the process to complete and things will be back to normal.

Tony, I allowed for time, as I have had the v1.2 for a while running and have been very happy. Since the new drive, it does not come back. I have a monitor attached, and it says FAIL for the drive, the other two drives installed test and reappear after a while. It did this in v1.2 and the newest 2.05, just purchased.

I am away from machine, but believe it is 64MB of RAM.

If it's any help, I couldn't check a 1250GB raid array in NASLite-2 USB v2.04 with only 256MB of RAM onboard - when I added another 256MB it went all the way through the check no problem at all.

64M, that's at the bottom of the chart. I'd say you need more ram. :)

RAM requirements for filesystem checks of large drives can vary greatly based on the content of the drive. In general however, the larger the drive, the higher the RAM required for filesystem verification. I’d say that for a 500G drive 256M should be sufficient, but if you have 420G of small files, more RAM may be necessary.

Thanks Tony, I put my old machine to rest peacefully last night, and pressed a newer machine into service as an NAS Server, with plenty of memory, and as of this morning, the migration appears to be working. I got spoiled by how well the old machine ran with only 64mb and 3 disks totalling 650GB. I never gave the memory a second thought. At least this issue forced me to upgrade to the 2.0 product :)

Is there a migration to the USB version for current owners - also, is there a demo so that we can test if theUSB version will work with my particular hardware?
