[panic]
After my RAID rebuild, I am getting heaps of errors issued by Naslite2, of the form:
Code:
# May 26 10:38:08 user.crit kernel: EXT2-fs error (device sd(8,17)): ext2_check_page: bad entry in directory #4227074: rec_len is smaller than minimal - offset=0, inode=0, rec_len=0, name_len=0
# May 26 10:41:13 user.crit kernel: EXT2-fs error (device sd(8,17)): ext2_check_page: bad entry in directory #4685828: rec_len is smaller than minimal - offset=0, inode=0, rec_len=0, name_len=0
# May 26 10:42:24 user.crit kernel: EXT2-fs error (device sd(8,17)): ext2_check_page: bad entry in directory #4734979: rec_len is smaller than minimal - offset=0, inode=0, rec_len=0, name_len=0
# May 26 10:42:28 user.crit kernel: EXT2-fs error (device sd(8,17)): ext2_check_page: bad entry in directory #4734981: rec_len is smaller than minimal - offset=0, inode=0, rec_len=0, name_len=0

I am going to replace drive 8 on Monday, but what is going on here? Is my data corrupted or is it recoverable? HELP!

ps: I am using Naslite ver 2.04 USB

As I only built this server a couple of days ago, I have a 2 day old data copy on another server. Can I trust the data on Naslite or am I better off trashing it and going back to the other copy?

There are a couple of things that are happening at the same time. Your array is not healthy and needs to be rebuilt prior to being mounted. In addition your filesystem is not healthy and cannot be mounted for export until fixed. Those cannot occur at the same time. You need to have a healthy array in order to create a healthy filesystem on it.

I know everyone complains about how long it takes to do a complete filesystem check and repair after initial format, but that is a necessary step in my opinion. Drives can have problems regardless if they are new or old. Same goes for cables etc.

My advice is for you to first rebuild the array. Then format it, and after that do a filesystem check and repair to ensure the filesystem is good for data.

I know odds are everything will be OK, but if you are going to dump 500G on that array a bit of Quality Assurance goes a long way.

I agree with the principles, but am still a bit woolly with the details here.

The 3ware RAID card finished rebuilding the array, and thinks that it is ok. In fact Naslite wouldn't finish booting until that had completed.

The problem now is that in spite of the RAID array rebuild, there are a large number of errors. This raises some questions in my mind:

1) What is the "correct" way to handle a situation like this
2) Is the RAID 5 array data not truly secure, if a single drive failure wrecks the whole lot!

Sure I can replace the suspicious drive with another one, but I want the server to give me genuine protection from a single drive failure otherwise it's not worth having. Thus the next big question is "Is the 3ware RAID card not good enough, or is it the Naslite system which is not good enough?".
