Happy Sunday!

I've been using NASLite+ for not quite a year (no problem, just works). So now I've bought NASLite-2 CDD, but have not put it to work yet because I'm a little uncertain about the repeated warning in the manual regarding the default gateway.

The warning note says:
Quote:
Setting a valid default gateway may make the server contents world-visible. Take particular care with your network setup especially if a broadband Internet connection is available via the same gateway.

I'm running the SmoothWall Express 2.0 firewall appliance which, in it's Advanced Status - Routing page says:
Quote:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination ||| Gateway |||||| Genmask
192.168.0.0 || 0.0.0.0 |||||||| 255.255.255.0
192.168.10.0 | 0.0.0.0 |||||||| 255.255.255.0
xx.xxx.xxx.x | 0.0.0.0 |||||||| 255.255.252.0
0.0.0.0 |||||||| xx.xxx.xxx.y | 0.0.0.0

(Sorry about the extra bars up there, but I didn't figure out how to format the table out of SmoothWall.)

Am I correct in thinking that I should put the SmoothWall box's LAN IP (192.168.0.1) in the NASLite-2 default gateway field, and that the warning is against entering the the SmoothWall box's gateway (xx.xxx.xxx.y)?

Or are we just supposed to put nothing in the gateway field if we don't want any comm between the Internet and the NASLite-2 box?

Thanks, and cheers from Phoenix! Steve

Oops! Sorry! I should have kept looking for a while longer. It seems the answer to my question is already here.

Thanks anyway. Steve

If your local network uses non-routable IPs, then using a gateway is pretty safe. In your case, you are on a 192.168... so a gateway should be no problem. :wink:
