Is there any set release date for NASLite-3?

I heard "early 2007" which I normally take to mean 1st quarter, so was wondering if there was any news of a date?

Or a feature list? Or both?

May 19th will be one year since we were told of it's impending availability.

So, the website can't be trusted, noone from the company reads the forums, or they just don't answer?

Seems like somebody I'd like to buy a product from. NOT!

Are things really this bad, or... ?

First where on the website do we talk about NASLite-3, second where is it required for me to answer about things that don't exist? How about this answer, Bigfoot stoled it.

Sounds like to me you would never have bought NASLite in the first place, so your point is?

Or what? and again, your point is?

It has been a month, I can't offhand remember where I saw it. I'm not aware that it is required for you to comment on things not existing, but it might be an idea to deny if you have any plans to make a version 3 any time soon. By the responses I did get, it seemed like I wasn't the only person aware of NASlite-3.

Well, you do have a point, I would never buy a version 2 just before release of version 3. I have been burned too many times by people who release a version just after they have shipped the old version to me. And just for referrence I do administer a server running NASlite 1.

Or was I wrong?

Considering the tone of your response I'm still wondering...

Can you blame me?

And to use your tone: What the hell is wrong with me asking if there is a new version comming soon before deciding if I should upgrade the server I have???

My point? When you buy server software from someone, it's not a bad idea to check what the roadmap is, what level of support one can expect. But in case I have offended someone, I could easily stop bothering you anymore...

Let me throw some water out before we start a fire about this. :)

Release nomenclature, at best is meaningless without a clear definition of what functionality is offered by a given version. Ralph and I do have a pretty well defined set of functionalities that are in development at any given point in time. Whether they make it into the final or not is not clear until we have a complete and seamless integration between existing and new functionalities. That is not always easy or even possible and often requires more work than the benefits it will bring.

The reason I'm writing this is to provide an explanation of why we tend to be tight-lipped about things. Until we have a prototype of a given functionality with a reasonable level of integration, we consider that functionality a pie-in-the-sky possibility and not necessarily something we are willing to promise.

I can't tell you how many people have "suggested" that we should not be concerned with size because today's hardware can do more etc. It would be easy to just strip a distro and slap an interface with our brand on it. But then I don't think that will be what you guys want. There are plenty of products out there built that way already.

Anyway, to answer the original question about NASLite-3 - yes, there will be such a thing but I can't tell you when it will be out or what exactly it will do. The only thing that you can be certain about is that it will be based on the 2.6 kernel instead of 2.4 as you find with NASLite-2.

I hope the above puts things in better perspective.

Just wanted to chime my $0.02 in. hhn000, your post came off a little bit offensive, I can't really blame Ralph for the response he wrote.

I thank Tony, and Ralph for a great product, I am on NasLite 2.04 and when 3.0 comes out, rest assured I would be buying that too, just to support their company, if nothing else.

I'm not saying that you are wrong, but the fact that it took a "little bit offensive" post to get a response, should tell you (meaning people in general) something.

Accusing us of misleading people and ignoring the forum was pretty low. Speaks volumes on behalf of the author.

Would you speak to Ralph in person the way you spoke to him on this forum? No, because you can get away with being a prick on an anonymous forum. People like you should be banned from using keyboards.

As one who is pretty tired of this industry given it's flim flam & hype - I don't stick my neck out for vendors. Yet we now own 7 licenses from server elements, and will probably buy more.

A good reason? NASLite "just works"...and you're never required to think about it again.

How many times have you had such an experience?
