I have just migrated my NAS 2.06 CCD from an 1.4 GHz Xeon system to a newer 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 system.
This is based on an Intel D865GLC board, which features a built in Intel Pro/1000 gigabit NIC as well.

If I configure for this NIC, read/write speads are extremly bad, not really usable. If I disable this on board NIC and install my Netgear A311 Gigabit NIC, it is much better, but still not what it used to be, with this very same Netgear NIC on the old Xeon board.

I have no idea what's going on and what to look for to fix. Looking at the syslog files, I found that the Intel driver gets loaded, regardless if that NIC is disabled or not ?

Any ideas ?

Disable everything you don't need in the bios. COM, LPT, AUDIO, USB, and everything else that takes up IRQs. Set PnP to off and reboot to allow the board to realocate IRQs, then try it again.

Thanks for this hint, it did the trick !
After disabling everything on this mainboard, that is not used,
the system now runs fine with just the built in Gigabit NIC.
Performance is now much better, as I was hoping for.

Well, I'm afraid to report that I seem to have a new problem now, which must be related to this topic in general.

Appart from two perfectly working SATA drives I also have an Adaptec 2400A RAID 5 controller working in this system.
So far, on my previous system and on this new one, using the Netgear NIC, it worked perfect as well.

In this new configuration, running with the built in INTEL NIC, access to anything on this Raid drive is causing problems.
Small files copy ok and fast. But as soon as I try to copy something bigger, the copy process comes to a halt, round about around 170 MB or so. Eventually the server disonnects itself and kind of restarts.
Feels to me like yet another IRQ problem on this box ?

What do I do now ?

Move the 2400A to a different slot and reset the BIOS again. In the past I've had random issues with stuff on IRQ9. Maybe that will take care of it.

OK, I did as suggested and tried about everything elese as well.
I managed to have this Adaptec card grep different IRQs in different PCI slots.
But no matter what I tried, the problem is still there, file transfers come to a halt anywhere between 170 and 460 MB (using the same test scenario all the time).

I have now put back my Netgear Gigabit NIC and dsiabled the onboard INTEL Pro Gigabit NIC. This is somewhat slower in network speeds but other thatn that, works w/o a glitch.

Strange stuff ....

Perhaps, some later kernel (and drivers) will fix that, who knows ...
