 Post subject: Rsync doesn't
PostPosted: Sat Mar 10, 2007 9:35 pm
I have two 250Gb WD disks, about 3 months ago in what was a 2.03 system. I'd setup Disk-1 as a mirror of Disk-0 and all seemed to work fine but I noticed after a few weeks that the drives had different sizes (so I figured it wasn't syncing).

Now I'm no techie but the forums mentioned ver 2.04 had some kind of rsync reporting upgrade. So I upgraded.

This is my rync log from last night:

2007/03/10 04:00:02 [31050] receiving file list
2007/03/10 04:04:28 [31050] rsync error: received SIGUSR1 (code 19) at main.c(1182) [receiver=2.6.9]
2007/03/10 04:04:28 [31050] rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 77 bytes [receiver]: Broken pipe (32)

Any ideas please.

- Chris

Haven't seen that one before... :?

Are all the files on the drives written via network by NASLite or were the drives populated manually using an alternate method? Were any of the files locked or open by a client during mirror? Also, how much RAM in the system?

What you can try, and I'm guessing here, is to delete all content from the destination drive, redefine the mirror and see if the problem goes away.

I suspect a permission issue, but am not sure why you'd have one, especially if the filesystem was populated by NASLite.

And as always, if anyone is having this problem, specifically "SIGUSR1 (code 19)" please speak up...

Here's this morning's:

2007/03/12 04:00:02 [1588] receiving file list
2007/03/12 04:03:32 [1588] rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (5912944 bytes received so far) [receiver]
2007/03/12 04:03:32 [1588] rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 85 bytes [receiver]: Broken pipe (32)
2007/03/12 04:03:32 [1588] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(1122) [receiver=2.6.9]

I have no idea what any of this means.
In a few days, I will re-do the the mirror disk (what do you suggest? reformat and let rsync rebuild or what?)

Thanks

- Chris

Oh I'm sorry .... when the disks were installed and formatted, I setup disk-1 to mirror disk-0 and set the access privileges to RW.

After that I never touched the mirror disk. I don't write to it (or even read from it actually). As data built up on the main disk, it seemed that the mirror was working (the sizes at least were the same). Then a month plus ago I noticed that the mirror was at about 100Gb but the main data disk was up to 160Gb.

The system box has 64Mb. And only those 2 disks. Kicker CD and USB card.

Any preference as to how I re-do the mirror ?

I think more RAM will fix your problem. 64M of RAM is fine for smaller drives, but as you store more files onto Disk-0, the required memory for a mirror will also grow.

I still haven't wiped and re created my mirror, but I did find out that the last file written to the mirror disk (apart from the the 2 mirror log files each day) was on 25Jan and was a 5.1Gb monster.

**(sound of dramatic and sinister organ music)**

Maybe that's too big?
