Hello, I recently purchased NASLite-2 CDD and am experiencing an issue I think related to RAM?

My config is an Intel D865GBF motherboard with an Intel 2.4GHz CPU and 256 MB DDR 2100 RAM. I have a Seagate ST3320620A (320GB ATA/100 7200 RPM 16MB CACHE 7200.10) drive.

When I copy over a few files at a time, there isn't any problem, it seems to work fine, but when I grab the whole folder (around 40GB) to move to the server, when I check the NASLite html system status page, the System Ram available gets to 3 and then a few minutes later the NAS box is unresponsive, I lose the SMB connection, I can't http to it and sometimes I am able to telnet into it to reboot and sometimes I am not able.

Does anybody have ideas as to troubleshoot the performance issue?

Also, the NIC is a 100MB card plugged into a 100MB Netgear and my Vista PC I am transfering files from has a 3Com 100MB NIC, what kind of throughput should I be seeing? So far Vista says I have been getting around 6 MB/sec when I upload my files. Shouldn't I be getting more?

Thanks!

Chris

Chris,
I'm running pretty much the same setup in a test environment here - P4, 2.4ghz, 256MB RAM, 300gb HDD. My stats for the system usually always shows most of the memory is in use but that's normal. It's not unusual for us to send 30-40gb at a time to the server (backups and other data) every two hours. We never seem to have a glitch at all - no drops or anything. There was a time a few month's ago though we did have a wireless client connecting to the NASLite server through a Netgear WGR614 Wireless router and the router would keep locking up requiring reboot all the time. Once we dumped that router everything cleared up for the wireless clients. Try to eliminate one piece at a time. If you can use a crossover net cable between your vista box and the NASLite box, and see if you get the same results. If you don't, then you know the problem lies elsewhere in the network (ie. router, switch, cables, etc.).
If the problem still exists, then you know it lies either in the vista or the NASLite box. When the vista box drops off from the NAS box, can any other pc's access the NAS box? That's gives you a good idea where the problem lies too. Hope this helps!

Todd

Todd, thanks for the information. I had also contacted Server Elements directly on this issue and the possiblity of bad RAM was mentioned and it was advised that I try running memtest86 from http://www.memtest.org Let's just say that I cancelled the test about 1/4 of the way through after seeing so many faults. I don't know how the system even booted with that RAM installed. I swapped out the RAM and all is good now. I will try the x-over cable though, just to see what happens, I am using a Netgear WPN824 wireless router and have experienced some issues with it so far.

Thanks!

Chris
