Hi:

Used the "mirror" feature for the first time yesterday. VERRRY nice. I have RTFM ... However, two questions:

Setup: Gigabit network; two NASLites v2.03, each with 1GB RAM; Source (of the mirror): 2.4GHz P4-M (mobile) with 76GB (around 18,000 files with some as large as 2GB and one file = 33GB) used on Disk-1 (a 300GB HDD); Destination: 1.6GHz P4-M with newly formatted 400GB Disk-0.

1] SPEED: I only get around 10GB/hour = 2.8MB/s, very consistently over time ( I checked destination every hour for 8 hours). Usually, when copying files using WinXP Windows Explorer, this setup gives me speeds as fast as 29-30MB/s, sometimes as slow as 10MB/s. Is this slow Rsync speed normal/expected ?

2] FUNCTION: this afternoon the mirror started automatically. For testing I had this moring purposely DELETED an entire folder with several sub-folders and files) at the Source, and ADDED a 1.6GB file to the Source. The file added shows as expected at the Destination, but the Destination also still shows the files that had been DELETED at the Source. This is NOT what I expected ... :?

The manual does not seem to give any hints ... Thanks in advance for any clarification.

Update: Ok ... so I had already RTFM. But I should have also done RTFF (with the 2nd "F" = "Forums") ... sorry :oops:

Tony's post therein from 22Dec2006 suggested to Thorston to wait until v2.04 is out. Since my 180 days is over ....

I'll now try deleting "lost+found" and see if that works for me.

Please still address the "SPEED" issue ... and I'll post back with updates.

Update: I purchased version 2.04 USB to get the detailed logs. The mirroring was immediately successful ! I am happy now with the function. Something in 2.03 causes a problem with deleting files at the Destination. (I tried deleting the "lost+found" in v2.03 ... no luck.)

Speed: there may be a hardware problem causing the slow speed. It took me a while to realize why I could initially not connect to the "new" v2.04 server after I created the USB stick. I tried to blame it on all sorts of things until I remembered this motherboard has TWO built-in gigabit NICs. Finally realzing that v2.04 defaults to the LAST NIC found ... after moving the cable to the second NIC all worked fine. Now I can re-run the complete (74GB) mirror to figure out speed and report back later.

Tricky little problem. Many attempts, starting with the usual suspects (bad cabling (network & HDD), bad RAM, bad CPU, etc). What I could not figure out for the longest time is why two brand new 400GB SATA drives installed on this essentially identical hardware configuration to my other NASLite server would perform so slowly. The MIRROR (rsync) was slow, but I had also assumed (wrongly) that the copying would perform like the other system. In the end (once the problem was revealed) what's even more surprising is why the two drives would work at all.

The hint finally came by scrutinizing the following SysLog. Notice, there's not a single mention of "SATA" ... everything looks normal, and yet only IDE ports are mentioned ... and yet Mirror worked (slowly), access was ok, etc.

A single change in the BIOS ... even though I had already tried all of the usual things (setting HDD to <none> etc): Under "Advanced Chipset Control", "SATA Mode". Only "Enhanced Mode" works. "AUTO" (the natural and common sense default) does not work, neither does "DISABLED", nor does "COMBINED", nor does "SATA Only" (the most obvious one you would think works). On this motherboard (Award Bios) "Enhanced Mode" enables BOTH IDE & SATA, and even though there are NO IDE HDDs, that is the magic mode that makes it all work.

Hope I haven't bored anyone reading this to death ... and hope it helps at least one other person solve a mystery in the future.

Oh ... almost forgot: I am up to 22MB/sec on the Mirror function and very happy !
