This happens with both OS X/NFS and Win XP SMB. Whenever I create a new file or folder on the NAS it is always marked as read-only. What can I do to change this? It is driving me crazy. Is it related to some ownership of the drive or files on it? When I do a ls -l, the owner is always listed as 98. What is that all about? What should it be?

Using umask 0 gets around the problem, but only for the current terminal session. I don't want umask 0 anyway as it is global and i want default permissions on my local drives. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? I also have another HD in the NAS box that does the same thing.

These newly created files are always marked -rwxr-xr-x which is what you would expect. I should have ownership over them because I created them. But if I do a Get Info in finder, it tells me that they are read only and the owner and group are unknown. In other words it does not know that I am the owner. I can modify and delete these files in finder with no problem, however it appears that some apps (mainly iTunes) are having problems removing or modifying the files that they create.

Naslite as well as your mac run unix clones. You can't just set permission on a remote server as you are trying to do. At the least the user you are logged in as on your mac must exist on the nas.

All files on the Naslite server belong to user 98 or NAS-User, so that's why you are having the problem. I think :)

You are right about the NAS user not jiving with the OS X account.

I can read/write all I want on the Nas, but iTunes still has problems. Unless my iTunes library has write access for everyone, iTunes will not even open the file. It reports that the file is locked. I think that iTunes is not even trying to open the file and is simply comparing my OS X account to the permissions being reported by the NFS mount. This does not sound like standard practice to me, as a developer I would always try to access the file before reporting it locked. Of course this is all just my theory right now. I will do some more testing.
