I have been copying large numbers of files from my Dual Core P4 to my NASLite-2 server. After a few minutes the connection is lost, and I get the message "\\Naslite-2\Disk-0\xxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

If I wait a while (often just a couple of minutes) and try again, it works again, and then after another few minutes stops with the same message.

I suspect it might be related to my 8-port switch, since this problem is worse when the family are using their computers also. But shouldn't network traffic be queued when it's really busy? (Sorry; I'm a noob in these matters).

The switch is a Lantech Mini B800 8TP 10/100 Base-TX switch/Auto-MDIX.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Could be many things, however to eliminate or confirm NASLite or it’s hardware as the cause, all you have to do is use a crossover cable and see if the problem persists.

Thanks, Tony.

I tried putting in a crossover cable, and there were no problems at all. I transferred lots of data over a day or so without one dropout. Great :)

Today I bought a new switch, assuming that the old one was causing my problems. We had had intermittent problems with network connections to other computers dropping out. Anyway, the new switch has made no difference at all :( The network connection to the Naslite server is still being dropped after a few minutes. Then if I wait, without rebooting, it reappears and I can start moving or copying files again.

What is going on :?: I would appreciate any help with this one, as I cannot use the server the way it is.

Sounds like questionable cables to me, If your using GigE, it is extremely sensitive to cables.

Try Locking down the the network speeds and see if that helps. The comment about cables is a good one because if you are using Auto and the cables are not up to par they will constantly re-negotiate the connection speed causing the short outages you are experiencing. I hope that helps.

set the switch ports to force-10 if you can and try the file transfers. If that is successful, lock the ports to 100 and try again. If that fails, try making or buying a certified cable and connect using that (both sides) I'm 99% sure you have cabling issues.
