does it actually work?

several people have the problem that they can not browse their network neighborhoud.

the problem is that NASLite identiefies itself as "Windows NT 4.9 Server"

and a server always has higher priority when electing the master browser
thus, naslite get's elected

BUT .. does is work :?: does naslite keep a record of connected computers in the network or is there something terribly wrong with naslite

see also this thread
http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/vi ... e8664d3781

i suggest an optin in NETWORK SETTINGS to enable/disable BROWSER MASTER capability (if possible to implement)

edit-
btw, i'm typing this because i too have problems now (since running nas2-cdd)
2x xp-pro, 1x 2000pro and the nas on one router
and the annoying thing now is, the only pc capable of still being master-browser is the win2k, which offcourse is mostly off
and then no-one wants to be master, so no-more-network-neighborhood :evil:

Perhaps the capability to be a browser should be removed outright. At this point I really don't see any significant value in having it. Resources can be of better use elsewhere.

Any thoughts?

P.S.

Actually, the current smb.conf is set not to become a master:

[global]
netbios name = NASLite-2
workgroup = ACME
server string = Network Storage (IP: 192.168.1.250)
security = share
client codepage = 850
interfaces = eth0
name resolve order = bcast host
max open files = 1014
socket options = TCP_NODELAY
local master = no

I think the only additional item necessary for a solution is to drop down the OS level reported by samba.

I had been running NL1.0 for well over a year and never had that problem nor over the last 5 months that I have been running NL2.0.

Guess that there are differences in the computers that don't allow them to browse.

dropping the version reported would do the trick i guess

as i see it, naslite not being the master is just the problem.
in the election they see naslite being a nt-server, thus they drop master-browser capability and eventually no-one is browser-master.

i could see a value in having naslite as bm thou.
which computer is mostlikely on at all times? naslite.

i would still opt for being able to set it manually as bm
that would envolve in setting 2 things at the same time

naslite = bm:
local master = yes
os level = 32 (255 is max, maybe input like with the status update increments)

naslite not bm:
local master = no
os level = 0

so, 2.03 is out
the browsermaster thing didn't by chance make it in there :?: :wink:

tony, if there's anything i can help with... just let me know

btw:
just wondering
the download link from purchase, does the 5x counter mean one can upgrade only 5 times ??? (and 180days max)

edit-
after upgrade, do you have to set everything again or do the upgrade's recognize previous settings ?

:roll: ....or i could just download 2.03 and see for myself (but that obviously would be too easy :wink: )

Having found this thread I've now discovered why I am suddenly getting master browser issues whereas before I've never had a problem. I've just upgraded from Naslite+ v1 to v2,

I've noticed that there will be a fix in the next release...
