I was wondering if the following cards are, or will be, supported in NasLite-2

Adaptec 1200A Raid Controller
Encore ENLGA-1320 Gigabit PCI Ethernet Adapter

Just to give an update to my own topic, and to ask a few questions:

NL recognized the Encore ENLGA-1320 Gigabit PCI Ethernet Adapter just fine. I haven't run any benchmarks yet, but at least it works. Yeah. Maybe another entry on the Supported Hardware doc.

NL also recognized the Adaptect 1200A Raid Controller. However, it didn't recognize the raid. Here's how I have it configured:

3 x 80GB drives. Two of the drives are configured in a RAID-1 set. The third is by itself.

However, NL sees it as 3 seperate 80GB drives. Could it be the card doesn't truly support RAID? I thought it did. Or could it be that the current driver doesn't recognize the RAID? That seems more unlikely.

Help.

I think that the Adaptec 1200 card is based on a Silicon image chip. they call it a RAID card bit in reality it is not, the RAID 0 and 1 functionality is built into the drivers and as such is SoftWare RAID. It will not work as a RAID card, but simply as a drive interface card.

No no no! Say it isn't so....

It would be so much better if the makers of the cards would simply say "hey, this isn't really raid. haha! Sucker!"

Or, maybe even a section of the NL Supported hardware that details what "raid" cards really AREN'T raid cards.

A very good rule of thumm is that f the card is only RAID 0, 1, or 0+1 then the RAID is implemented in the drivers. There is really no overhead to those implementations for the processor so that is why they do that. I agree that it sucks. I look at the chipset and look it up before I buy. There are very few if any RAID5 cards that are not hardware based. That being a hardware Xor Engine and processor to offload the Parity, and DMA duties to.

Well, I guess that's what I get for going the cheap route. So, now I basically have just an IDE expansion card. Bummer.

I also bought a 3ware 5800 card, but have yet to get the card to work (actually, I have 3 of them, and none will build the array). But it may not matter, as I don't think there are drivers for that card.

Any suggestions on a cheap, hardware raid card?

Yah the 5800 cards are also just JBOD cards, no RAID functionality built in.

The 3Ware 7xxx and 8xxx cards are where you need to be looking but NOT the 9xxx cards. The 9xxx cards are not supported in the kernel source that Ralph and Tony are using yet
