Hello all,

Motherboard is the ASUS A8N-VM CSM

About one in two boots the system freezes at the beginning of the USB boot process just after a message
"Uncompressign the Naslite Kernel..."
"Ok, booting the kernel."
"ieee1394: sbp2: Driver forced to serialize I/O (serialize_io = 1)"
_

It happens about once every 2 attempts, can i change anything in the BIOS to prevempt this happening ?

I tried the two USB boot methods, tried disable the IEEE1394 internal port (dont need it) , no avail.

I could live with it, if really no fix is found do.
The Naslite server doesent have to be restarted very often, its just that i dont let a monitor attached to the box so i wont know if the boot is succesfull or not.

Please help.

PS : The new SATA support is really great.

Could be a lot of things, but my first bet is IRQs. If your board allocates a single IRQ to multiple devices, that can be a problem. Make sure that everything that you are not using is disabled in the BIOS. Also, make sure the PnP OS option is turned off in order to force the BIOS to allocate all IRQs as necessary before NASLite-2 boots.

That’s just a suggestion. There can be other problems, but I can’t think of anything offhand.

Hope that helps.

Hi All,
I am running the same MoBo, and have the same exact problem. Has anyone figured out a solution yet? This is annoying if you don't plan on having a monitor attached to your server. I've tried changing many options in the bios, but I don't know how to assign irqs, the only options seem to be 'auto' and 'resereved'.

NASLite-2 USB, Asus a8n vm-csv, A64 3000+, 1GB RAM, Booting off a sandisk USB Key. Thanks in advance!

Have either of you tried flashing the BIOS with the latest version?

Try that if you haven"t and see if it helps.

Also make sure you turn off everything in the BIOS that isn't used as Tony said. That includes the floppy as well, unless you need it to kick the USB port off. If you have a PCI NIC then try moving it to another slot. If it is built on you may be able to change the IRQ allocated in the BIOS. Another thing I do is simply remove the video card after I am done building the box and get it setup. All admin can be done from a telnet session so there is no need for it to be in there. Don't forget to set the BIOS not to give an IRQ to the video card. Think this is only for PCI video cards but just to be safe...
