I'm thinking of using NASLite 2 USB to power create a server to be used on our Settwork where it will augment and possibly replace a reByte device (http://www.rebyte.com). I have a couple of questions:

1. Does Naslite 2 work with Epia mini-itx systems - we're thinking of using one of these to keep power consumption down

2. Is it possible to encrypt partitions on NASlite using third party software - for example could we create a TrueCrypt partition and access that ? We can create an encrypted folder on our existing reByte server and access that via the network so we assume NASLite would do the same.

I am currently running NASLite-2 on a VIA EPIA MII10000 mini-ITX motherboad without any problems whatever. I am also running it with a Adaptec 29160 SCSI card. There were some problems installing it because of the need for USB Flash drive. I finally found a flash drive that will work with the boot floppy. After getting NASLite-2 installed, there have been no problems.

The MII 1000 board is the one I was planning to use. What problems did you have with the USB flash drive ? Was it a problem getting the board to boot from any USB drive, or was it a specific problem with the USB drive you had? Why the need for a boot floppy?

I'm pretty certain I've managed to solve the encyption problem - I'll post here when I've installed NASlite and tested it.

I'm using an Epia ME6000 board booting from a USB key without the need for a kicker disk. I use USB-HDD as the boot device in the bios.

The problems I had were that the USB flash drives I was trying would not boot (yes, I tried USB-HDD also) from the drives. This meant that I had to use the kicker floppy. Once I started using the floppy, I had to try several flash drives to find one that would work with the floppy. Once this combination was settled on, I have had no problems.

We seem to have had some success !

Our server is built using a Via CN1300 C7 mini-ITX motherboard. It booted first time - the USB key boots as a USB floppy drive and successfully installed. To handle encryption, we have used TrueCrypt 4.1 to create a number of encrypted file containers which are stored on one of the shared disks. These can be mounted and decrypted over the network, and are only accessible as decrypted to disks to the remote pc that accesses and ecrypts them - they appear to it as a local drive. Any other pc viewing them over the network sees only the encrytped file container.
