I truly thought I had this SMART "available - not enabled" mystery solved. After running hard drive diagnostics and loading up one server with all drives, SMART was reporting just fine on all drives. Then I started to move the drives into their destination servers (1 NASLite v1.5-USB, 2 NASLite v2.01-USB). First, any drive moved into a v1.5 server reports SMART just fine - no problems. Any drive moved into a v2.01 server reports "SMART available - not enabled". Any drive MOVED BACK to the server where they previously were successfully reporting SMART data, suddenly stop reporting and revert back to "SMART available - not enabled". Is this just me having this situation? These are new MoBo's - everything shut off that could be, and previously working SMART.
Thanks for any help - I'm lost.

Can anyone else confirm this behavior?

OK, so lucky me ... I have the only (different) drives, and (different) MoBo's that exhibit this SMART behavior:
1. If installed in NASLite v1.5, SMART tests/reports are working.
2. If installed in NASLite v2, the drives show SMART available and capable / SMART disabled.
Example:

=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
Device Model: WDC WD2000JB-00GVA0
Serial Number: WD-WCAL81189995
Firmware Version: 08.02D08
User Capacity: 200,049,647,616 bytes
Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show]
ATA Version is: 6
ATA Standard is: Exact ATA specification draft version not indicated
Local Time is: Sat Aug 5 13:40:02 2006 UTC
SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
SMART support is: Disabled

SMART Disabled. Use option -s with argument 'on' to enable it.

If the drives are removed and tested with the Seagate and Western Digital diagnostics they all test fine ... and SMART is enabled by default.

So ......

Does anyone want to hazard a guess why I have this condition, and how to fix it? And what is with this "use option -s to enable it" ... 'cause that is not a hard drive option.

Thanks (and I won't ask again).

Grumpa,

I have also looked at this. on my xp machine i have two drives one being a seagate and a maxtor. the seagate shows smart info but the maxtor does not.

My maxtor smart will not enable, but when i run maxtor tools it gives me some info that its ok and cant do self tests.

could it be that the smart util is not reading the drives correctly and on a ealier version it was working.

smartctl -a hda
smartctl version 5.36 [i686-mingw32-xp-sp2] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen

SMART support is: Disabled

SMART Disabled. Use option -s with argument 'on' to enable it.
Press any key to continue . . .

I am haviing s.m.a.r.t. problems just like what is described. but only on 1 of 5 drives. 2 maxtor 300s 2 maxtor 200s 1WD 80g. one of the 300s doesnt read the smart data, all other drives ok. this 1 drive was not installed on v1.5. I didnt install it untill after v2.01. ??????

Just my 2 cents ....no complaints ...just an observation.

Not a problem at all guys. You are simply stating what you are experiencing. Ralph and I are working on tracking down and fixing/improving any problems and shortcomings that we can identify. SMART support is one such item that is getting attention.
